One of the city’s standout symbols and sights, the enormous Astoria-Megler Bridge spans the lower Columbia River and connects Astoria and Oregon to Point Ellice in Washington. Due to its arresting architecture, the bridge makes for a striking sight and has even appeared in films such as Free Willy and The Goonies. Completed in 1966, it is impressively still the longest truss bridge in North America, stretching over six and a half kilometers in length. Designed by William Adaire Bugge, it towers to sixty meters in height with each of its cantilever-span sections only carrying one lane of traffic in each direction.

Great drive across the river into Washington...see the coastal waterway before it is discovered and becomes coveted and expensive. Astoria was one of the first western settlements on the West Coast (trading post, Astor Fur) and then home to the famous Bumble Bee tuna cannery. The town is coming back alive and there are great metro coffee shops, hotels, stores, restaurants, and walking around everywhere.

This bridge literally towers right over the town. A really tall/steep section leads you out of town towards Washington before getting down to the water level.

The other side of that beautiful bridge is Washington State - not Canada. Cross the bridge and feel the energy of the Columbia River beneath you. Visit sites on the Lewis and Clark trail, Fort Columbia, or Cape Disappointment with two lighthouses! The Long Beach Peninsula is old-school summer beach fun with kite festival and more. Just remember to come back and hang out in Astoria when you're done!
