The Best cupcakes, cakes and pastries in-town [much better than Magnolia bakery] Take downtown 1 Train to 86th street - Take M86 bus across the park to 2nd Avenue [30mins]

This is one of the best bakeries in NYC for cakes and desserts. Currently somewhat hidden behind the construction on 2nd Avenue.
