The Teatro Margherita was built between 1912 and 1914 in the old port on piles driven into the harbour bed. This unusual step was taken in order to bypass an agreement between the Municipality of Bari and the Petruzzelli family, according to which the public authority undertook not to build any other theatres on municipal soil, with the exception of structures built on the water.

Costruito su palafitte nell’ansa del vecchio porto tra il 1912 ed 1914 su progetto dell’ingegnere Francesco De Giglio, il teatro Margherita è il primo edificio realizzato a Bari con struttura in cemento armato. L’edificio poggia su pilastri isolati fondati in acqua, e completamente circondato dall’acqua era collegato alla terraferma da un pontile. Nella seconda metà degli anni ’20 con l’aggiunta del solaio di calpestio del Circolo della vela e con la successiva colmata del lungomare, il Margherita abbandona l’aspetto di costruzione sospesa sull’acqua. Il teatro venne danneggiato sia dal bombardamento del 1943, sia dall’esplosione della nave Henderson del 1945. Ristrutturato negli anni ’50, fu adibito a cinema. L’edificio, le cui influenze stilistiche richiamano all’art nouveau, è a pianta rettangolare.

Questo teatro fa da scorcio verso il mare a Corso Vittorio Emanuele, merita una visita perchè è sede di mostre per tutto l'anno ed è cosruito sul mare con la tecnica delle antiche palafitte.
