Broadstairs is part of Thanet. A long time ago,it was its own island. Today it is a peninsula, known as Kent Riviera, with 10 sandy beaches and 26 miles of coastline. The central part of Broadstairs is the Viking Bay which is sandy and pretty. The best way to enjoy it is from the clifftop restaurants (Posilipo). Morelli’s ice-cream, also on the clifftop, is an institution worth a visit. On the side towards the tower, there is a serious fish restaurant called Wyatt and Jones that also serves interesting fish takeaways as Flotsam and Jetsam. There are a few pubs in the high street, the most notable of them being a former Chapel, which also hosts a well-loved independent Palace Cinema. To the north of the Viking Bay is Stone bay which is larger than Viking bay and can take a 15 min walk (park on the top of the cliff, follow Church or Rectory road); great for a stroll after a meal. Further on north is the town of Margate with its artistic quarters. You cannot walk all the way along the beach there, but if you take a car, Joss Bay (with an art deco Light House) and Kingsgate and Botany Bay on the way to Margate are pretty and less crowded, with chalk arches. They are the most romantic in the area I’d say. Margate itself has a Turner Contemporary gallery and a retro amusement park Dreamland which often hosts gigs. There are some good eating places (Angela’s). We go to GB Pizza, which is relatively cheap and very good. To the south of the Viking Bay is Dumpton Gap which is less remarkable (but also has free parking). It is good as a starting point for a cliff top walk towards Ramsgate. Ramsgate is an old port town with a harbour and many eating propositions. One could do very well eating in a restaurant on top of the arches enjoying the positively French vibe of the harbour. Great on a sunny morning.

About 5 miles away, drive or jump on a train. Busy tourist town, lots of Dickens connections and an eclectic range of places to eat and drink.
