Just a few meters beyond the theatre, you come across one of the most significant churches in Parma: the 17th century Basilica of Santa Maria della Steccata, worth a visit because of its large frescoed dome and the works by Bernardino Gatti and Parmigianino. Seat of the Sacred Constantinian Order of Saint George since 1718, inside, the church also houses a treasure of art and history – the Museo costantiniano della Steccata – with sepulchral chapels of the ducal family, wooden statues and religious ornaments.

Esempio del Rinascimento a Parma, con pianta centrale a croce greca di tipo bramantesco, la Basilica Santa Maria della Steccata venne eretta ad opera di Bernardino e Giovanni Francesco Zaccagni su progetto di ignoto tra il 1521 e il 1539

A 2 passi dal Teatro Regio si erge questa Basilica,risalente alla metà del secolo scorso.La sua collocazione si deve ad un'apparizione di S.Giovanni Battista.Affrescata tra gli altri dal Parmigianino.

La basilica magistrale di Santa Maria della Steccata, dal 1718 sede dell'Ordine costantiniano di San Giorgio, è un santuario mariano realizzato a Parma tra il 1521 ed il 1539. La chiesa, che rientra fra il patrimonio dell'Ordine Costantiniano, dal 2006 è inoltre sede del Museo costantiniano della Steccata.
