Grosse Point Lighthouse is a beautiful, historic landmark with a small museum of artifacts was built by the United States Government in 1873 as the lead lighthouse marking the approach to Chicago after several shipwrecks demonstrated its need. The promontory on which it stands was named Grosse Point (Great Point) by early French explorers and traders in the 17th century. Over the years, the U.S. Government dropped the French "e" on Point. While the grounds of Grosse Point Lighthouse National Landmark are open to the public free of charge year-round, tours of the lighthouse are held seasonally due to weather conditions. Admission: $6 for adults and $3 for children aged 8 to 12.

Climb to the top of the lighthouse (when open) or go to Lighthouse Beach. Next to the Historic Harley-Clark Mansion.

The historic Grosse Point Light is located in Evanston, Illinois. Following several shipping disasters near Evanston, residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse. Construction was completed in 1873. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1976.
