o For running/ hiking trails on the prairie – a 5-10 minute drive from Hawthorn House, some of my favorites are Boulder Reservoir Loop and the Boulder Valley Ranch, where both the Sage and Eagle Trails are relatively flat, wide open spaces.

Want to take a quick swim? Boulder Reservoir is the choice of Boulderites and visitors alike for boating, swimming, sunbathing and enjoying a picnic. Call for admission and to reserve your boat and equipment rentals ahead of time. Boulder Reservoir also provides reserved picnic areas for groups of all sizes at several sites located on the south shore of the Reservoir. Areas may be reserved from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily throughout the summer. In winter this is a quiet spot for walking the trails and seeing the wintering duck species with the Flatirons in the background.
