One of the many nice courtyards around in the Jordaan. Most are public so have a look how Amsterdam tried to make living possible for everyone already in the 17th century.

A typical courtyard. This one is one of the prettiest in Amsterdam, and the tranquility is amazing, right in the middle of the city!

Ignore the by tourist overwhelmed Begijnenhof but go here. Much quieter and better conserved.
