The State capital has a bustling scene. Plenty of restaurants, cute specialty and coffee shops. Great record store if you like vinyl.
The cutest capital city in the whole country! Nestled amongst the mountains, it's definitely worth a visit. Great food, coffee shops, sweet artisan and vintage shops and a seasonal farmers market.
The capital of Vermont with lots of beautiful buildings. Hunger Mountain Coop for groceries. Great small farmer's market. Langdon street for vintage and music shops. Bohemian Bakery for coffee, treats and awesome sandwiches. Favorites are Wilaiwan's Thai (very good and very hot even if you ask for mild), Enna (excellent lunch and preorder take-home dinners), Barr Hill for cocktails and yummy bites, Oaks & Evelyn for a nice dinner, and Hippie Chickpea for take out (but note it takes a while). Three Penny has a nice local beer assortment and high-quality pub fare. The Savoy Movie Theatre has a cozy vibe in the downstairs theater with drinks and snacks. In general double-check hours as places can be closed at unexpected times.

Recently voted the "Best Small Town in America" by USA Today, Montpelier is the smallest state capital. We enjoy the independently owned small shops offering books, recordings, clothing, fine crafts chocolates and pastries, the Statehouse and great food! Well worth the half hour drive---and on the way to Barre if you are planning to go to Hope Cemetery.
