A long hike with lots of stairs, north of Grand Marais. The falls at the end are worth the walk. Stop at Naniboujou Lodge for high tea afterwards.

(2.5mi, moderate): Trail, with many stairs, follows the river offering views of waterfalls and rapids. A 50-foot waterfall mysteriously disappears into a hole in the bedrock. Try your luck a catching brook and rainbow trout. Directions: 4.5mi west of Hovland on Highway #61 to Judge C.R. Magney State Park. (5min drive from Hovland)

2.0-mile out-and-back trail just north of Grand Marais. Considered a moderately challenging route, it takes about an hour to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, camping, and hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

(45-Minute drive) 39.6 miles north on Hwy 61 There are three waterfalls here. The Lower, Upper, and Devil’s Kettle. You can take a quick trip to the Lower Falls, just a five-minute (but steep) trek. To reach the Upper Falls and Devil’s Kettle, it is two miles round trip. Although this trail quality is pretty good, it is a strenuous hike; there are a LOT of stairs. This waterfall is amazing and a must-see, if you are able to do steps. Pace yourself and rest on the benches if you need it. This unique waterfall has sparked imaginations for decades. That’s because this waterfall, called the Devil’s Kettle, splits into two: one half of the river flows up to the edge of the falls and tumbles over, but the other half slips into a hole at the top of the falls and disappears into the earth.
