There is a tower and lean-to near Santasport / Ounasvaara. Bring matches and something to grill (like barbecue sausage). The Ounasvaara Observation Tower is 2.2 km east of the city centre of Rovaniemi, on the western slope of Ounasvaara. The massive tower stands on the rocky hillside of Ounasvaara, amidst a pine forest along the Ounasvaara Winter Trail, at 160 m above sea level. You can access the observation deck via stairs and an intermediate platform. The tower has a roof, and it offers magnificent views over the city centre and the Kemi River. Next to the tower, there is a log-built lean-to with a campfire site and woodshed. Directions: drive 1.1 km out of the Rovaniemi city centre along Kajaanintie; turn left on Ounasrinteentie; drive 350 m; turn left on Hiihtomajantie; drive 1.5 km to the Ounasvaara Cabin’s parking area. Follow the signposts from the parking area to the observation tower (900 m). You can access the tower via several trails, for example, from the Ounasvaara Cabin’s parking area, the Sports Academy, and Ranuantie. In the winter, you can walk along the Ounasvaara Winter Trail or snowshoe to the tower.

Great views on the city and surrounding from a tower. Next to it is a shelter with a fireplace where you can grill a sausage.

Take your sausages, marshmallows and drinks and walk up to find a open fireplace with woods ready for you to burn. Climb up to watchtower to see Rovaniemi view! If going there during the nights take also some flashlights since road there is bit rough but great place to see northern lights!!!

Only place in town to see the whole city at once. Not well known with tourists.

This is a great spot to grill, to climb a small wooden tower, from which you have a great view 360 degrees around. If you would go there at northernlights time, the view would be stunning! But it's NOT EASY to find. Maybe that's why not that many tourists go there. But if you know where, it's not far to walk. Try to use a map navigator on your phone. It should show the official trail there. It's great for snowshoeing in winter, or hiking in summer. There is also very good berry picking and mushrooming spots there in autumn
