We just discovered this place January 2020 - great sunsets, awesome birding (lots of native and migratory birds) and.... Gators!
Home to the Whooping Crane Festival every year in February this famous bird sanctuary features a boardwalk that stretches nearly a mile over the shallows allowing for close observation and panoramic views. Some of the birds you can expect to observe are waterfowl, heron, egrets, cormorants, shorebirds and flaming pink Roseate Spoonbills.
There are several natural attractions on the island, but this is our favorite. A small park with a long marsh pier and a tower, this area lets you enjoy the natural ecology of the island at its best. Great for kids.
Take a short hike down the boardwalk to view hundreds of Sea Birds. So much variety. Bring your binoculars, or use some of the provided ones that are attached to the upper deck. If you are very lucky, you might spot our local Alligator.
