The Balcón de Europa is, without doubt, Nerja’s most iconic landmark and the focal point of the town. Everyone who visits Nerja eventually makes their way to the Balcón de Europa. King Alfonso XII is credited with having given the viewpoint its name. While inspecting the damage caused by a huge earthquake during a formal visit in 1885, he is said to have stood on the Balcón and been so enthralled with the view that he exclaimed, “This is the Balcony of Europe.” Although documents have since been recovered suggesting that the balcony was named before the visit, the legend of the King’s influence remains widely accepted. Recognition of this was formalized with the construction of a life-sized statue of the King overlooking the balcony. A much loved and photographed monument. The Balcón de Europa is built upon a former fortress and gun battery known as "La Batería." The cannons were housed in huge towers that were strategically located along the coast. They were used primarily by the French against pirate raids and against the British.

Balcón de Europa is Nerja's heart and pride. From the "Balcony of Europe", you have a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding Almijara mountains. On the rock was formerly a Moorish fortress. Today several of Nerja's fiestas are celebrated right here.

Typical andalusian coastal village (www.nerja.es/turismo_ing) [30 minutes]. You should not go without enjoying the Nerja Caves (www.cuevadenerja.es) and Balcón de Europa views. Maro Cliffs and Beaches are also recommendable.

The "Balcony of Europe" is a mirador or viewpoint which gives stunning views across the sea, is in the centre of the old town of Nerja. Nice restaurants and bars.

The balcon de europa offers a breathtaking view in Nerja of the sea and the mountains and is a popular spot for photos! Nerja is one of the prettiest coastal towns in the Costa del sol and we highly recommend you head over there, it’s less than a 30 minute drive from Casa Reina. Parking can be challenging but if you need to the balcon de europa car park you should be able to find a spot, the pretty central streets of Nerja are just around the corner. We highly recommend visiting “Cochran’s” bar whilst you’re in the balcon de europa area for a cocktail and lunch on their terrace which overlooks the sea.
