Take the motorway direction Faro and stay on it until Lagos (1 h). Follow the signs Vale d'Obispo and Sagres. Just behind Sagres lies Cabo de Sao Vicente, the most south-westerly point of Europe. Beautiful cliffs, fantastic waves – and the closest point to America in Europe. Leaving out Cabo de Sao Vicente you can also turn right in Vale d'Obispo, direction Aljezur. The road leads parallel to the westcoast, which is full of beautiful wild and (out of season) empty beaches. Two of the nicest are Praia do Amado and Praia da Bordeira (behind Carapateiras). If you turn left before or after Carapateiras you cannot miss it as a dust road leads along the stunning coastline.
