Harder to access but worth the effort. Two hour drive from Hilo. On we there just hike or hire the trucks to access beach (about $20 per person round trip).

A car is essential to see the Big Island.
KOA (Kailua-Kona) and ITO (Hilo) are the airports. It's a two-hour drive from one to the other. It might be most efficient to bookend travel if your car arrangements can be one way.
