The city of Alkmaar is known for its cheese and called "cheese capital of Holland". Every friday morning in the summer the biggest cheese market in the world is held. The cheeses are traded on the square. Once the traders agree on a deal by slapping each others hands until there is a deal is struck and sealed with a handshake. The cheeses will be picked up by cheese bearers to get weight on the scale in the weighing house. After the weight has been registered it will be transported to the buyers location. In the early days by boat, nowadays by trucks. It's a tourist attraction which makes Alkmaar a busy place on the friday mornings

The market lasts (8.30-16.00) until the late afternoon and is bigger than usual. As anywhere in Holland, there is mostly something to do around the church square.

How can you skip Amsterdam. It's almost a must. Even though almost any visitor i have spoken with prefers the Alkmaar area over Amsterdam. Amsterdam has a lot to offer, from museums, walking, shopping, sightseeing, patio's, restaurants, coffeeshops and more. It's too much to mention, but it guaranties you don't have to get bored soon.

Amsterdam has a lot to offer, from museums, walking, shopping, sightseeing, patio's, restaurants, coffeeshops and more. It's too much to mention, but it guaranties you don't have to get bored soon.

Train station Heiloo. You can take the train to practically any place you would like to go in Holland and far beyond. You can buy the tickets in the machine with a bank or credit card. Scan your tickets individually to get through the little gates. Remember to keep your ticket as they might check you in the train again. Also, when you get to the train station of your destination you have to pass through little gates again by scanning your ticket.

The forest of Heiloo is a great place to go for a stroll if you want to escape or get a shot of nature. Year round this forest has plenty of paths to walk, bike or take your horse or dog for a run. This forest was once owned by a family who resided in the big white house with the pond in front of it. The house 'Nijenburg" is from the beginning of the 17th century and had close ties with the most important people in Holland at the time. The "hill" you see in the middle of the forest is the dirt coming from the pond in front of the house. If you put your back against the house you will see a corridor of trees all the way to Egmond.
