City/town information

About 86km away from the Sydney CBD, Hazelbrook perfectly harmonises modernity with nature. Nearly 700 metres above sea level, visitors breathe in the view of the glorious Blue Mountains and the typical Australian wilderness. Nature enthusiasts will relish the tranquil scenery that Hazelbrook’s many waterfalls and swimming holes offer such as Horsehoe Falls walking track, which is an 8 minute walk from the property. Also, you just can’t leave Hazelbrook without checking out the world-famous Lyrebird Dell Walking Track. It has spectacular caves and mesmerising gorges. It is particularly popular among bird watchers, since it may provide you with glimpses of some of Australia’s rare species such as Mistelle toe birds, Silvereyes or- as the name implies- Lyrebirds. Hazelbrook has its cafes and restaurants located mostly at Hazelbrook Village, which is 200 metres from the property. There you will find a convenience store, newsagency, post office, Thai restaurant, Chinese restaurant and other quaint cafes.

If you want authentic Italian pizza in the mountains, Napoli corner is the place to go. It has daily specials with the flavoursome ingredients of Italian cooking. My brother in law from Genoa agrees and that says a lot! I recommend the Credo pizza.

If you follow Dimsimlim on TikTok, you'll be happy to know that he runs this restaurant. It's a good Chinese restaurant - casual with down to earth ingredients, bringing you memories of eating Chinese food as a child. I recommend you order their signature dish - Satay chicken with its Malay nuances and my favourite, Santung chicken.

Ok, if I had to go to Leura to eat brunch, The Bunker cafe does not disappoint. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Plus you get to eat in a heritage style sandstone building which makes evrything seem more authentic.

A 200-metre walk from the property, this is our go to Thai restaurant. Prices are reasonable and service is efficient, and they are a Thai crew cooking from the heart. My favourite is the whole fish barramundi with vermicelli pictured here, it’s a relatively mild dish that you can share with a plus one. You can also take away if you fancy and they are open until (Blue Mountains) late.

If you like The Hobbit and similar things, you should definitely go to Yellow Deli Café. It is a haven of recycled wood, basket lamps, and charming paintings. The café specialises in gourmet sandwiches and my personal favourite is the Reuben and the Deli Rose. My favourite drink is the chilled yerba maté. It gets very full during the weekend and so you must book in advance. My line is always – I live locally and they seem to give me a spot quicker 😊

Horsehoe Falls is a 7 minute walk from the property. It's a sloping track to the waterfall where you can see age old fern trees and bush aspect. It is a moderate and relatively short walk but can get quite muddy after it rains. Make sure you have proper shoes.

Terrace Falls is Hazelbrook’s best kept secret! It is arguably the best waterfall trail in the whole of the Blue Mountains. It is an incredible trail full of waterfalls and cascades punctuated by lush greenery and giant ferns. The overhanging foliage, multi coloured fungi and knotted trees add to the dramatic atmosphere especially after a good downpour of rain. It is part of a fire trail and relatively easy walk with some uneven terrain and uphill sections – after all it is in the mountains! It is located on the other side of Hazelbrook (South side). Start your walk from the crossing of Valley Road and Terrace Falls Road. You will find a signposted fire trail to Terrace Falls Walking Track. Follow the signs after about 200m when the trail turns left and starts slowly descending towards the Bedford Creek. Once you reach the sign Bedford Pools turning left you can either continue your main track or walk down to the pools. You will find mini cascades along the way that will ultimately surprise you!

Shopping

If you love shopping for antiques and special gifts, this is one of my favourite places to go. Located in Blackheath, the Victory Theatre Antique has 50 dealers over two floors with wares ranging from jewellery, books, vintage clothing, paintings, dolls, ornaments, light fittings, fine china and porcelains, through to furnishings and furniture, boasts the greatest variety of stock in the Blue Mountains. It is situated in a beautiful ArtDeco style buidling.

Hazelbrook's own antique shop across the station from the property. It is a 10 minute walk and worth having a look. It's like going inside a living museum that creates nostalgia and intrigue. Shop for something unique, special and meaningful.

Be transported to what grocery shopping really was back in time. Lyttleton is a historic story and was the name given to the building by the first owner/builder John Geggie, in honour of his wife’s maiden name Lyttle. This space is used as shops for the north side of Lawson, with the residence and garden an honest old time way to live and work in a small town. The store has organic produce, arts and craft made by locals. It is across Lawson Chinese restaurant so have a browse after you eat.

Art Gallery

The Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum is a heritage-listed former residence and farmlet of one of Australia’s most prolific and popular artist. Norman’s residence has now been converted into an art gallery and museum located at 14-20 Norman Lindsay Crescent, Faulconbridge 10 minutes down the mountain from the property. Built from 1898 to 1913 by Francis Foy, Patrick Ryan, Rose Soady and Norman Lindsay himself, the museum houses Norman’s paintings, sculptures, sketches and workshop memorabilia. Touring the gallery is a fascinating and compelling insight to Norman Lindsay’s life, work and passion.

Opening times

Please note that a lot of the smaller cafes and local shops tend to be closed on Sundays and Mondays. Please check Google maps and type the name for opening times. They do not re-open til Tuesday. Being a Sydneysider, I found this quite annoying but I got used to the fact that living in the Blue Mountains puts real emphasis on work-life balance.

Flatlanders

Blue Mountains is a tight community of people who support each other and have a strong identity. Flatlanders is the term people around here use from people in general who come from Sydney. Please do not take offence, it's a term of endearment.
