Beaches, hikes and beautiful sights
This is one of the best beaches on the island! It is an example of the white sands beaches that Hawaii is famous for. There are lifeguards, bathrooms and outdoor shower facilities! There are also open pavilions, picnic tables and barbecue grills for use too! Hapuna beach park is about 25 minutes away from Hale e Komomai.

Spencer beach park is very well equipped for beach goers! It is a reliably calm beach adjacent to Pu’ukohola which is a National park featuring a historic heiau. It’s a great beach for small children and has all the amenities of a good beach including lifeguards, showers, level access to the beach, barbecue grills and shady trees at the edge of the sand! Spencer beach park is 20 minutes away from us.

This is an important historic site where the unification of the Hawaiian kingdom took place. The National park service has preserved the site and the history and story are there for locals and visitors alike!

Waipio valley is one of the most popular photo ops! The view from the overlook is spectacular! The road down into the valley is the steepest paved road in America and is no longer recommended. It is not safe to drive except for experienced off road drivers of 4x4. You can hike down into the valley and explore the black sand beach and you might see a few of the wild horses that live in the valley. The valley is home to a small community of mostly taro farmers who have over the years developed a strong appreciation of privacy so if visitors venture into the valley going towards the shore is appreciated, but exploring deeper into the valley (where the boundaries are not so clear) is not. Hiking back up out of the valley is a tough hike but people are really friendly and if you stick your thumb out chances of getting a ride aren’t bad!

Maunakea is the premier observation site for astronomers. It is also steeped in Hawaiian culture. The visitor center at the 9000’ elevation level and is managed by the National park system and there are a full array of presentations, educational displays, gift ideas, and even some telescopes that are manned by knowledgeable people that visitors are invited to look through! Driving further up to the top at 13,796’ elevation requires at least a half hour acclimation stop at the visitor center and 4WD. Talking young kids to the summit is not recommended because of the hazards of altitude including thin air.

Hawaii Forest & Trail is the best tour company in the state! Frank used to work for them which is not why I say it’s the best, but rather it is why he went to work for them as a sunset career. The guides are knowledgeable island residents, who are very well educated and knowledgeable about every aspect of the tours. The groups are small and the buses are spacious with big windows. Leave the driving to someone else in order to make the best of the trip and see and learn the most. This is really the best way to see the island! https://www.hawaii-forest.com/
