Up north, Wai'ipio Valley is an enchanting place but a challenge to get to. The small road into the valley requires a 4x4 and is the steepest road in the United States. You can walk as well though the hike up can be strenuous. The valley floor has a black sand beach, a river where you might see wild horses and Wai'ipio Falls, the second tallest waterfall in the world.

Waipio valley is one of the most popular photo ops! The view from the overlook is spectacular! The road down into the valley is the steepest paved road in America and is no longer recommended. It is not safe to drive except for experienced off road drivers of 4x4. You can hike down into the valley and explore the black sand beach and you might see a few of the wild horses that live in the valley. The valley is home to a small community of mostly taro farmers who have over the years developed a strong appreciation of privacy so if visitors venture into the valley going towards the shore is appreciated, but exploring deeper into the valley (where the boundaries are not so clear) is not. Hiking back up out of the valley is a tough hike but people are really friendly and if you stick your thumb out chances of getting a ride aren’t bad!

If you have four wheel drive, you can drive down into the valley. Most people hike down. Very steep. You can go to the beach, ford the river and cross the valley, see this beautiful waterfall. If you want to go further, you can take a trail up and over and drop into the next valley. But we’ve never done that. NOTE: the trail is currently closed!
