Bring bug-spray in season!

The bugs in the spring can be very pesty! We recommend hats, bug spray, even head nets for fishing. Avoid smelly lotions or perfumes. It is just a fact-of-life in the Upper Peninsula this time of year.
Samgöngur

Be careful relying on your GPS and cell phone!!

Acquaint yourself with the area if you are going off-road. GPS can be unreliable at times. Take a map and a compass in the deep woods. Cell phone service can be very spotty!

Snowmobiles and side-by-sides

This area boasts some of the best groomed snowmobile and ORV trails in the mid-west. Connecting hundreds of miles of trails, Hiawatha Cabins is located less than a mile to Trail 7. You can ride from your front door.

Forest Wildlife!

We are in the middle of the Hiawatha National Forest. The forest is home to all kinds of wildlife. Most of these are very elusive and avoid humans, but you may just be lucky enough to see in the right place at the right time. Just always be aware of your surroundings and be prepared. To list a few we have seen with our own eyes: white-tailed deer, black bear, bobcat, wolves, mountain lion, badgers, rabbits, snowshoe hare, otters, beavers, fisher, weasels/ermine, moose, pine marten, coyote, turkey, fox, snapping turtles, painted turtles and more.

Birds of the air!

Bird species vary far and wide: we've seen bald eagles, osprey, sandhill cranes, swans, wilsons snipe, heron, loons, vultures, geese and many of your average variety yard birds.

Fish of the water!

Fishing is a huge, year-round activity enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The Big Lakes, Michigan and Superior offer a wide variety of catch and the smaller lakes and streams are always busy, as well. Salmon, trout, perch, whitefish, blue gill, walleye, bass, northern pike and more. Check out nearby Corner Lake or Pete's Lake, along with literally 20+ smaller lakes and some creeks and rivers, all within a very short drive. Check out Michigan dnr/things-to-do/fishing for maps, licensing, rules online.

Late spring/early summer turtles

Be careful when driving the rural roads around lakes, streams and rivers, many turtles come out to lay their eggs and end up crossing some of our roads. We always carefully stop to make sure they get across without getting hit. Snappers, which can be very large, can be very aggressive if they feel threatened, so never try to pick one up! Put on your blinkers for other traffic and let them cross.

Northern Lights - Aurora Borealis

Many people ask about seeing the Northern Lights. This is never a guaranteed event or even one that's easy to accomplish. Best to have an app downloaded on your phone that alerts you to potential for seeing them. Then, you need to be in the right place at the right time. We've seen them from the cabins on occasion. Sand Point in Munising is an often used location when the lights are predicted and offer dark-skies for prime viewing. This is an activity that needs a little prep-work, but the reward can be amazing.
Siðir og menning

No air conditioning

We generally do not get extended periods of super hot weather and evenings generally cool down. Each bedroom has a fan and a fan in the living room. The cabins can warm up during the day. Most guests are out and about during the day anyway, so we recommend closing curtains and keeping fans running on low to circulate air. Evenings generally cool down and we always like to suggest a trip to Corner Lake to jump in and cool down.

Midway General Store

The store is right next door to the cabins and is a must visit. Not only do they have about every convenience item you could use on your trip, they have great souvenirs and an amazing selection of hand dipped ice cream. Stop and let them know you are staying at the cabins, they love to meet the area visitors
