Fun groceries and other shopping

For cheap and easy cooking, added with some other favorite shops.
This is the supermarket for the Turkish community in Enschede. Great fresh meats and vegetables - here we get our meat for barbecue - Their ready-spiced minced-meat ('adana') is very delicious, also their lamb-chops. Aks the butcher for 'marineren' and your meats will be ready to use. Fruit and veggies are very affordable here.

Ladies'clothes and accessories, my favorite shop, I go there just to feast my eyes. It has a timeless Bohemian assortment of clothing and jewelry where I find almost every piece worthwile. Around it there are more shops who seem to have been inspired, offering clothing and things for your home.

walks and bicycle tours near the Cabin

Walks and bicycle tours less then 15 min away by bike, from the Cabin. Mostly they're forgotten bits of former big farming or textile tycoon real estates. These private forests, though open to the public for tax benefits, are largely left untouched which makes them very authentic and pretty.
It's a half an hour walk from the cabin. If you take a bike, 10 minutes. At the Hooge Boekelerweg you pass the gilded gate of the castle and a little bit further down the road, from a small parking lot you can enter the forest around the estate. Best to keep your dog on a leash, as the house is guarded by its own dogs. The Boekeler dogs only make noise, so don't be frightened if they bark. https://goo.gl/maps/KgPkeBn6sKmNuxKS8

This is the Schukkinkbos, very characteristic for Enschede: a small, ancient, very beautiful and forgotten piece of forest and wetlands, with lots of fallen trees, wrapped around an authentic oval-shaped meadow and sided by a highway, a farm and several high-voltage pylons. The atmosphere is just gorgous and small deer also like it - you can find their beds here and there. It's a ten minute bicycle tour away from the cabin. When you get there: you'll encounter a few (thick) trees fallen over the path - just climb over them and explore. https://goo.gl/maps/vYaspgr9F3x5iQEN8

The start of your forest walk here is half an hour away from the Cabin ( by bicycle). Very beautiful untouched forest, as it's still private property - It was the garden of a textile tycoon and is still owned by this family. But it's open to the public. https://goo.gl/maps/ZuczZEEJBoUWZZ51A

Beautiful culture lands, owned by private parties (I'm not sure who, probably a former textile tycoon), but it's open to the public, this saves them a lot of taxes. There are more of these around Enschede: very beautiful culture grounds, forest, greenlands with a huge house on it here and there. Walks and bicycle tours in Nature

A very important Germanic temple is supposed to have been located here, for the godess Tanfana. It lies about 9 km. away, in a beautifully forested hilltop. Tanfana is a godess of the night and deep knowledge, and always accompanied by a 'Hell Hound'. It's a very positive, energetic place though, near the monument, 36 leylines (energy-lines in the earth) come together - so it says on the sign before the monument.

A fairly good sauna where you pay by the hour. If you manage to do a quick sauna round so you can leave within, or after, one hour, you pay only 6 euro's. I can't recommend their food and the Zen feeling is sometimes hard to find as everyone chatters in the sauna as they like, but the audience is usually cheerful and relaxed.

Lovely natural, but well maintained, public swimming water next to Oldenzaal, app. 13 km away from us. Thriftshops

Rommelmarkt, trödelmarkt, secondhand store...we love them. Many of our unique finds come from one of these. Their prices are still (relatively) low.
By far the best thrift-market in the wide area, in both quality and price. It's held each saturday and some sundays, and great for tasting local culture. Here you find great antiques, special curiosities and rare finds, and also all kinds of foods and new products that 'fell off a truck'. Prices are great (or at least, for rare/great/special products, fair). And, it has a great atmosphere, sometimes with live music from local culture. Best to be there as early as possible! The market is held every Saturday, and it’s about half an hour by car, from the cabin.

Great with kids - and cheap for what you get: the 10 euro entrance fee includes a free lunch. Hof van Eckberge has a zoo with a reasonable variety of animals, along with good playing facilities not involving electricity (a waterpark, maze, jumping/climbing gear etc), for rainy days also indoors. For older kids, there is bowling and lasergaming.
