One of Edinburgh's famous "7" hills Carlton Hill is right in the middle of the city and offers incredible views of Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and beyond. It is very steep though it is possible to take a taxi to the top if you have any concerns about the many steep steps to the top. Your reward are those views and there is now a café and art centre at the top. Especially gorgeous at sunrise and sunset or when there are fireworks over Edinburgh Castle (Hogmanay 31 December, the end of Fringe festival fireworks - usually around Monday 26 August, and nightly during the Edinburgh Military Tattoo throughout August).
If you happen to be in Edinburgh on 30 April you can catch the Beltane Fire Festival or the Samhuinn Fire Festival on 31 October - both run by the Beltane Fire Society and incredible events that go well into the small hours of the night.
