This is my top recommendation for visitors, particularly on short visits. It's like being on a movie set with its iconic, surprising buildings. Climb the Tower to get 360 degree views over the city, sea and countryside. It's the best place to get your bearings after arrival.

Neighborhoods

Canonmills is a former village and still has that feel, despite the traffic. There are several coffee bars and restaurants and the attractive Orchard Bar. Also one of the best Chinese restaurants in town
You can walk along the river, the Water of Leith, to Stockbridge, voted one of the best places to live in the UK. Abundant with boutiques, eateries, great charity shops, pubs and atmosphere. Tourists and locals love the Sunday Market

Canonmills Bridge spans the Water of Lieth, Edinburgh's river that boasts a 12 mile river walkway, from the Port of Leith to the Pentland Hills. You can get on or off the walkway at any time. It's a great way to walk to the west end of Princes Street (30 mins) Dean Village and the Gallery of Modern Art (40 minutes)
