Canonmills is a former village and still has that feel, despite the traffic. There are several coffee bars and restaurants and the attractive Orchard Bar. Also one of the best Chinese restaurants in town

Canonmills Bridge spans the Water of Lieth, Edinburgh's river that boasts a 12 mile river walkway, from the Port of Leith to the Pentland Hills. You can get on or off the walkway at any time. It's a great way to walk to the west end of Princes Street (30 mins) Dean Village and the Gallery of Modern Art (40 minutes)
