This is a favorite stop and is also located close to Fayette Historic State Park. Palms Book is a rewarding side trip for the vacationer touring the Upper Peninsula, for here can be seen one of Michigan's alluring natural attractions -- Kitch-iti-kipi, The Big Spring. Two hundred feet across, the 40-foot deep Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest freshwater spring. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degree Fahrenheit. By means of a self-operated observation raft, visitors are guided to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and fantasies. Ancient tree trunks, lime-encrusted branches and fat trout appear suspended in nothingness as they slip through crystal waters far below. Clouds of sand kept in constant motion by gushing waters create ever-changing shapes and forms, a challenge to the imagination of young and old alike. Manistique also has several sweet gift shops and restaurants to visit as well as a beautiful lighthouse with a lovely boardwalk. Restaurants include The Upper Crust, Cedar Street Cafe, Clyde's Drive Inn for burgers, and Tap21 for spirits and delicious pizza.

This lighthouse is very special to us! It's just a 12 mile drive from our property and home to the monarch butterfly migration each year! Peninsula Point is a special place for a number of reasons. During the 1860's, the ports of Escanaba, Gladstone, Fayette and Nahma were teeming with ships hauling fish, lumber, iron ore and other products. These sailing ships needed navigational help to protect their hulls. When iron ore loading docks were built in Escanaba in 1864, Congress appropriated the funds to build a lighthouse. Construction of the lighthouse in 1865, included a 1½ story brick home for the keeper and his family. A hand-operated oil lamp burned in the lighthouse until 1922, when an automated acetylene light replaced it. . Today visitors can climb the 40 foot circular staircase to find a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Rest rooms, as well as tables and grills for picnics, are available. The limestone shoreline yields fossils estimated at 400-500 million years old. And Peninsula Point is also a popular spot to enjoy the Monarch Butterfly and bird migration. Local birding enthusiasts have compared Peninsula Point to Point Peelee National Park of Canada, and have recorded over 200 species of birds.

These breathtaking falls are a 2 hour 15 minute drive from our property and offer many hiking trails. It is also close to Paradise and Whitefish Point Lighthouse, home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. This makes for a cool day trip! Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres and stretches more than 13 miles. Most of the park is undeveloped, and the park's centerpiece is the Tahquamenon River and its waterfalls, which are viewable from multiple accessible overlooks. The Upper Falls is one the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River and has a drop of nearly 50 feet, is 200 feet across and has a maximum flow of 50,000 gallons of water per second. The river’s amber color is caused by tannins leached from the cedar, spruce and hemlock trees in the swamps drained by the river, and the extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the river’s trademark large amounts of foam. Just 4 miles downstream is the Lower Falls, which consists of a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. The falls can be viewed from the riverbank or from the island and can be reached by a rowboat rented from a park concession.

This is one of our personal favorites. This stop is interesting as well as having a beach, bird observatory, gift shop and museum! We usually will eat a meal in Paradise before or after our visit. The Inn Gastropub & Smokehouse has delicious food! The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum has become one of Michigan’s most popular destinations in the cultural tourism industry, attracting over 75,000 visitors each season. Museum patrons learn about the perils of maritime transport on the Great Lakes at the Whitefish Point Light Station, an Historic Site on the National Register of Historic Places. See the Whitefish Point Light Tower, in continuous operation for 155 years, the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Superior. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society was founded in 1978 by a group of divers, teachers, and educators to commence exploration of historic shipwrecks in eastern Lake Superior, near Whitefish Point in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula.
