My purpose during this tour is to share my passion towards Helsinki, capital of the happiest country of the world! Apart of sharing many fascinating stories about Helsinki's history, present and future, I will be happy to answer your questions about the way of Finnish life and cultural habits. I was born and raised in Finland, and I want you to get a real feeling of Helsinki, not just the touristic one. After the tour, you'll also know the answer to the following questions: Why is sauna so important for Finns? What is the "Unicorn Block" of Helsinki? How much is the biggest speeding ticket ever given in Finland? What did Napoleon have to do with Finland? Are we Finns really the happiest people in the world? The groups are small, maximum 8 people, so you'll have a chance to ask all of your questions. In the end, you'll receive a recommendation list of restaurants and things to do in Helsinki that includes all my personal favorites. Let's discover how unique Helsinki really is! Hike in a National Park and Sauna by a lake
Experience the relaxing and refreshing effects of a forest on this nature walk in a national park, enjoy a campfire barbecue and top it off with a relaxing visit to a traditional smoke sauna. During this experience, you will get to discover the beautiful Sipoonkorpi national park with a professional wilderness guide. The guide will lead you through the park and tell you about Finnish nature and wildlife around you. Our trail leads us to a rocky vista overlooking a forested lake where we will have a campfire barbecue. After the nature walk (total 6km) we will continue to the traditional smoke sauna next to the national park for a relaxing sauna and swim. The smoke sauna is held in the highest esteem by most Finns and will give us hot and smooth heat called - löyly - in Finnish. The smoke sauna is located next to a freshwater lake so we can go for a refreshing dip during our sauna breaks. After some fresh air, we will head back into the sauna to warm up again and then we will repeat the entire experience twice more. If you are brave enough to join us in the winter we will go for the famous arctic dip in the ice water! You may have heard that the Finns bathe in the heat naked, but since we are at the public mixed smoke sauna it is necessary to wear a bathing suit, so no sweat! (Okay, there still will be sweat.) * Feel free to request alternative tour dates! *
Searching Wild Fungus Sipoo National Park
The purpose would be to take a journey ecologically and responsibly, respecting nature and creatures. The Journy start from the city center coming by bus to the direction of Vantaa/Sipoonkorpi National Park and walk about 5 minutes from the bus stop to the destination until we reach the forest trails. Then we walk/hike for about an hour or two to discover some wild mushrooms and to find out a small lake in the park, collecting edible mushrooms and learning about super quality mushrooms and those that are toxic, the founded edible mushrooms are possibly grilled and the rest distributed among the guests. We will have a break at the fire place with the beautiful view of Bisa lake to eat home made organic wild mushroom soup and pie/slice of pizza, also we grill at the fire place, i usually bring brown bread sandwich and sweetcorns, but upon the request of the guests we can BBQ food containing meat for instance sausage. I am flexible with the schedule in the afternoon, and we are as long as guests enjoy the nature and the park. Please consider at least two hours of walking from the bus stop to the national park and back to the bus stop. We have different mushrooms for spring such Gyromitra esculenta (korvasieni) which is poison and should be boild 2 times for ten minutes then consume, real Morels also some that growing on trees.
Magical Taiga Forest Hike
This day trip takes us off the beaten path to Liesjärvi national park, a breathtaking landscape carved by glaciers and shrouded by old-growth forest that will provide a magical setting to spend the day exploring nature. The park itself is a wonderful place for foraging wild foods such as blueberries, lingonberries, chanterelle mushrooms, porcini mushrooms and many more. As I have studied here in Finland as a wilderness guide, my passion lies in the knowledge of nature, so we will be stopping along our walk to talk about our surroundings, search for seasonal wild foods, and really enjoy the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of this wild national park. For lunch, I will cook a delicious campfire lunch which normally includes smoked salmon soup, rye bread, blueberry pie, and coffee/tea. Extra info: Our drive there will have a bathroom break/coffee stop approximately 25 minutes before entering the park. The walking trail is approx. 5 km and only requires a basic level of fitness and regular shoes. I have rain jackets in case of bad weather and often the weather is much less intense outside of Helsinki, so do not worry too much about the sideways rain in the market square! - Other dates available upon request -

Architecture Tour of Helsinki
Helsinki is a gem for architecture enthusiasts. It is difficult to find another urban space that houses a wide range of architectural styles like Helsinki; neoclassical, gothic revival, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Nordic classicism, modernism, functionalism, and contemporary styles in a compact city centre. Different historical periods left their marks on Helsinki, however it is easy to miss these great works of world renowned architects (from Engel to Saarinen, from Aalto to Siren and Revell) in ordinary city tours. We will start with the old center of the city, visiting Helsinki Cathedral and National Library of Finland designed by Engel, the most influential architect in Helsinki in the first half of 19th century. We will then visit 3 important works of world famous architect Alvar Aalto (Stora Enso HQ, Academic Bookstore and Rautatalo). We will continue with Eliel Saarinen's Central Railway station. On our way, we will stop by two important libraries, KaisaTalo (Anttinen Oiva) and Oodi (ALA) and I'll explain the unique library culture in Finland. Strolling through important buildings such as the Music Hall (LPR), Kiasma (Holl), Finlandia Hall (Aalto), National Museum of Finland (Saarinen), we will make up our way to The Rock Church (Suomalainen). On our return to downtown, we will head to The Glass Palace (Revell), Amos Rex (JKMM) and Chapel of Silence (K2S). Other things to note We will walk around 6 km, please come with comfortable walking shoes, extra layers for warmth and umbrella for rainy days. Please check out my website for various tours www.atamantours.com
