Parks & Nature

Located less than a block from Happy Days. The trail follows the rail line that once ran from Fernandia Beach to Cedar Key from 1861 to 1932. Though it's quite short (only 1,700 feet), the rail-trail offers walkers a pleasant, natural escape with native vegetation on all sides flush with birds and wildlife. At trail's end, a few old trestle posts poke up through the shallow bay, remnants of a bridge that once carried trains across the water. Note that bicycles are not permitted on the path, but would not be well-suited with the trail's sandy surface in any case. From State Road 24 southbound (approaching Cedar Key), turn onto Grove Road; a small parking area is immediately on the right.

Visit one of North America's most prehistoric places, Devil's Den -- an underground spring inside a dry cave in central Florida. The remains of many extinct animals from the Pleistocene Age (2 million - 10,000 years ago) were discovered at Devil's Den, including the bones of early man, dating back to 75,000 B.C. The pleasant year-around temperature of 72 degrees in the Den allows comfortable diving, winter or summer. On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the cave's chimney. Hence, the early settlers called the place Devil's Den. You'll find open water and cavern diving at its best. Truly a natural wonder.

Arts & Culture

Picturesque Cedar Key, on Florida's Gulf Coast, was a thriving port city and railroad connection during the 19th century. The museum contains exhibits that depict its colorful history during that era. Part of the collection has sea shells and Indian artifacts collected by Saint Clair Whitman, the founder of the first museum in Cedar Key. Whitman's house is located at the park and has been restored to reflect life in the 1920s. A short nature trail gives visitors the opportunity to see wildlife and birds, as well as native vegetation. Small gray squirrels, doves, mockingbirds, blue jays, woodpeckers, and green tree frogs can be seen on the museum grounds and along the walking trail.
