Arts & Culture

At 67 Long Street you will find the Pan African Market. This building houses several floors of craft makers and dealers. In some shops, you’ll see tribal masks coming into form and traditional jewelry made. It’s the best collection of African! Be sure to explore several floors as well as the less obvious shops in the corridors as some of them hold truly wonderful crafts from all over the continent.

Sightseeing

In 1652 a number of streets came into existence above Strand Street (which followed the natural shoreline) and the Company Gardens which initially functioned as a market, run by the Dutch East India Company to supply ships and nearby farms. In the 1950s the square was turned into a parking lot. 1962 the square and surrounding buildings were declared a national monument. Late 1980s the parking lot was replaced with a flea market trading African curios and crafts and rented out to private vendors. Make plenty of time for all the markets, restaurants and entertainers on the Square!

Essentials

SunScreen is imperative. South Africa is at the tip of Africa, and the sun here should never be underestimated. The UV factor during summer is very high and we recommend you bring along at least a 35 SPF sunscreen or higher, a hat, good sunglasses and aftersun. Even if you do cover up, you will still burn if you have fair skin. Cape Town can get quite windy during the months of February and March, you are still at risk for sun burn even though you do not feel the heat of the sun during windy days.

Situated in Cape Town's busy CBD, Bukhara has Spicey and great Indian food. You can watch the chefs in action, only a glass wall separating them from the guests. This restaurant is frequented by business people, politicians, food critics and all lovers of excellent food. A must!

Drinks & Nightlife

The evening vibe of Long Street is, and always has been, a party you’ll never forget. From sundowner time until the early AM, the restaurants, bars and late-night clubs are all about keeping the party going! The street has all kinds of private decks, balconies, rooftop lounges and other vantage points where exclusive parties are held. On street level, pavement dining in summer (October to April) is what it’s all about. And the barmen of Long Street have become famous for their skills with exotic cocktails. In fact, when Cape Town wants to celebrate something… anything, Long Street is always the first thought.
