An alternative to tourist guides

A few kilometers from Cavriglia, on the right side of the Arno river valley, the protected area of the Balze is a surprising, small Monument Valley. The best route to explore it is the CAI trail 51 “sentiero dell’acqua zolfina” (trail of the sulphurous water), so called because it partly runs along a sulphurous water source. This ring-trail starts in Castelfranco di Sopra, near the post office, and winds its way through a surreal landscape of natural spiers and cathedrals, surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. The route is 7 km long, including the detour to the charming village of Piantravigne.

Only the walls of the ancient Cistercian abbey dedicated to San Galgano are still standing: their gothic architecture and the roof open to the sky make this monument an incredibly suggestive place. The hermitage next to the abbey encloses a stone with a sword: the legend tells that Galgano stuck his sword into the rock to turn the weapon to a cross.

COUNTRYSIDE = INSECTS!

In the countryside there are always insects everywhere, don't be surprised to find them even inside buildings. Insects are particularly numerous and annoying the hotter the weather is. So, especially in summer, when you stay outdoors we recommend you use skin repellents (check that they are also effective against horseflies), mosquito coils and clothes to cover yourself (long sleeved shirts, long pants, socks). Wear white or light-colored clothes. In the case of wasp or horsefly stings, be equipped with antihistamine and cortisone products, both to be applied to the skin and taken orally.

Cold spells may occur during spring and autumn so, if you have planned your holiday in these seasons, come prepared with warm clothes, to wear inside as well as outside, and don’t forget warm socks and slippers. This will also help you control any heating expenses.
