Food Scene

Looks very unassuming from the outside and food is cheap but in my opinion it beats most expensive restaurants in central London in flavour. Stunning sushi arrangements (especially Volcano Roll), the salt & pepper squid and lamb chop are excellent starters. They don’t have an alcohol licence but you can bring your own drinks which makes the meal even cheaper. It’s best to book in advance because there’s fewer than 10 tables and it’s busy every night of the week.

Almost next door to Zaibatsu. Run by a really funny Irish chap called Tom. Excellent pies and boiled ham. There’s no menus so you can’t see the prices and when you ask for the bill he totals everything up in his head. It’s quite cheap though.

Nepalese restaurant near the house, good for standard British style curries like Chicken Tikka Masala with poppadums and nan bread and so on.

If you want to try something more exotic (and hotter!), this south Indian restaurant is really good. It looks kind of crap from the outside and normally there’s only some Indian family members eating but don’t be fooled – the food is really tasty. Try the Masala Dosa!

There’s lots of food options in Greenwich town centre but this restaurant is one of the better ones. Good steaks and pizzas. (If you’re going to Blackheath book their original branch there, it’s a really homely restaurant with views overlooking the heath.)

If you want to try traditional fish & chips, this place is the best. Currently 15th best restaurant in London according to Tripadvisor but it used to be number 1. (No idea how the algorithm works as it’s far from a dining experience!)

Loads of different food options especially on Saturdays and Sundays. My favourites are Thai curry, lamb and halloumi wraps and dumplings.

Drinks & Nightlife

Literally a 2-minute walk from the house, this is a classic local pub with good food, drinks, nice garden, sports on multiple screens, activities and relaxed atmosphere.

Beautiful old pub a 5-minute walk from the house but a bit further from town so customers are mainly locals enjoying stunning riverside views over Canary Wharf financial district. The pub is very cosy inside with fireplaces, timber beams and good food.

Potentially the oldest pub in Greenwich and still very much with original décor. Live fireplace, dogs on the floor, pictures of Churchill on the wall plus good food.

Open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, this pub has live music, somewhat eccentric local customer base and one of the few remaining original bar billiards tables in the UK. Hardly anyone knows the rules any more but normally there’s a friendly local to explain how the game works.

The nearest overground train station Maze Hill is literally 2 minutes away. Don’t walk around the main street as there’s an entrance right at the end of Earlswood Street. Trains from this station go to Greenwich, Deptford and Cannon Street which is near London Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral. Bank station is a 5-minute walk from Cannon Street with access to Northern, Central, District and Circle underground lines.
