Parks & Nature

McKinley Grove is a stand of virgin, mostly mature Giant Sequoia trees, with the largest being over 230 feet tall. Mature sequoias average 15 ft. in diameter and 250 feet in height. At the turn of the century, fallen trunks of giant sequoias served as cabins and tables. Some cut stumps were so large they served as dance floors that would accommodate two or three dozen couples. McKinley Grove was originally called the Washington Grove and then Dusy Grove in honor of a colorful local settler. It was later named McKinley Grove after the 25th president of the United States. Because there were no roads or trails nearby, McKinley Grove remained undiscovered until 1869. Even then few people visited the site. The grove remains in the public domain, but has been protected by the Sierra Forest Reserve since 1893. Take Hwy 168 east from Clovis toward Prather. Continue through Prather to Shaver Lake. Just before you reach the Village of Shaver Lake turn right on Dinkey Creek Road. Travel 11.7 miles east to the Intersection of the Dinkey Creek Road and the McKinley Grove Road. Turn right and travel 5.7 miles north on the McKinley Grove Road to the picnic area.

As you approach the Huntington Lake area (about 20 miles from Shaver Lake), you will cross a bridge. At that point, watch for the large Mono Hot Springs directional sign pointing to the right (16 miles to Mono Hot Springs). If you end up at Lakeshore Resort, you have missed the Mono Hot Springs exit by about 1/2 mile. The first 5 miles of the Kaiser Pass road is a nice smooth two lane road. Then the last 12 miles turns into a rather narrow and curvy more or less one lane road but paved. You can only drive about 20 MPH. There are only 3 areas that are cliffy. Don’t let the road bother you, there has never been a serious accident on the road for the last 80 years. There are numerous turn outs along the road but sometimes when vehicles meet, one vehicle has to back up a little for a turn out; it is usually best to back up past the turn out using only your side mirrors and then drive forward into the turn out. Along the way, especially once over 9,200 ft. Kaiser Pass, you are in a different world; there are many scenic turn outs to view some really spectacular Wilderness scenes. After going about 8 miles on this road you will see a small Forest Service Ranger Station to the left, and then two miles ahead watch for a sign directing a left hand turn to Mono Hot Springs and Edison Lake.

Arts & Culture

There is a lot of history here and a great hike right behind the museum! The Central Sierra Historical Society and Museum, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) public benefit corporation. CSHS was founded in 1991, but its roots date back to the early 1980’s, when a group of individuals in the central Sierra recognized the need for an organized effort to preserve the fast-disappearing history of the area. In addition to the museum building, CSHS is actively preserving local historical treasures, such as a 1902 Dolbeer Steam Donkey, a 1912 caboose from the SJ&E Railroad, a 1920 Mack Truck, the Pine Logging Camp, and collecting the oral histories of area pioneers. The “Museum Without Walls” series of lectures, field trips, and social events have helped to build educational programs. There is a demonstration only powerhouse on the grounds that was dedicated in 2013. This is the only running powerhouse in a museum setting throughout the whole world. The gift shop at the museum provides adults’ and children’s’ books on California history, Native American culture, pioneer lives, natural history, wildlife, environmental issues facing the West, and recreational activities in the Sierra.about-us-train

Sightseeing & Hikes

Great place to hike or fish! Looking at a Sierra National Forest Map, Dinkey Creek is centrally located between Shaver Lake and Wishon Reservoir, approximately 65 northeast of Fresno, California, in the Sierra National Forest. Activities include river rafting (unguided, at your own risk), fly fishing in early spring, and stream fishing for rainbows as well as native brook trout and german browns. If fishing is a little too tame for your taste, try a number of nearby four-wheel drive trails which are rated from Class A to Class C depending on your expertise, available for use by vehicles, dirt bikes, bicycles, or hikers. If you prefer to hike, there are many options to explore — the Dinkey Lakes chain in the wilderness area where you can visit numerous lakes depending upon your energy level, Granite pools for a perfect day trip to a gorgeous hide away on upper Dinkey Creek, and much more.

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad (YMSPRR) is a historic 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railroad with two operating steam train locomotives located near Fish Camp, California, in the Sierra National Forest near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Rudy Stauffer organized the YMSPRR in 1961, utilizing historic railroad track, rolling stock and locomotives to construct a tourist line along the historic route of the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company.
