Great, authentic Italian that's off the tourist trail and a big hit with locals. Just one block away. An ambient setting with a choice of seating options. Grab a table for a full meal or sit at the bar and enjoy a few small plates - especially the salt and pepper pork ribs! The eggplant parm is also my fave but it's hard to go wrong here. 179 3rd Ave (Corner of 17th St)

Arguably the best Spanish restaurant in NYC. Amazing small plates, incredible wine list, and a must for foodie fans. This place is super popular (and small), so a reservation can make sense, or pop in and put your name down - then head to sister establishment, Bar Jamon, for an interim vino in a moody setting. Located downstairs, right of building entrance.

Upmarket Middle Eastern fusion in a theatrical restaurant setting, reminiscent of Casablanca (in my opinion). There's something for everyone on the extensive menu. I've been here a million times and have never been disappointed. 250 Park Ave South

Excellent Japanese food. Decent prices. Hugely popular with the locals. You can't really go wrong if you're a Japanese fan but don't go there for the ambience. 122 East 17th St (corner of Irving Place)

Bustling French bistro with all of the French faves, open super late in case you’ve been out boozing (wink wink). Generally a great vibe and you can dine at the bar if there alone.

Isabella's became an immediate hit with locals. I've been here once and thoroughly enjoyed every dish and plan to work my way through the menu. (Same owners as Barbounia over the road so expect the same quality.) 245 Park Ave South

This place is basically my second home. A kitsch, fun locals’ spot to sit at the bar or a high table and have some margaritas and fab tacos without spending a fortune. I love the carnitas tacos, the guac, the tostadas, and the steak quesadilla (extra toasted). Expect more of a Lower East Side vibe, with a loyal Gramercy crowd and super lovely staff. 218 3rd Ave

I still haven’t made it here which is inexcusable, because this place is legendary locally, for an upmarket drink and bite at the bar. Get there early to snag a spot. Modern American fare and a gorgeous, buzzy bar. 42 East 20th St

This place was instantly packed when it opened a few years back. Some Indian favorites with American influences thrown in. I haven't dined here yet (because I'm obsessed with Sathi around the corner), but it’s usually packed (with many Indian New Yorkers) which is obviously a good sign. 115 East 18th

With a grand interior dating back to the 80s, sit at the huge bar and try the frozen pomegranate margarita with a serve of guacamole. (Go for happy hour if you can get a spot). They make the guac fresh in a huge mortar and pestle bowl, and it’s damn delicious!! 9 East 18th St

I went here once simply because my friend was singing jazz (they sometimes have live music). The Italian food is utterly delicious and very traditional; pasta made in-house etc. I’ve brought many friends here and we always agree the food is phenomenal. You can also sit at the bar if dining alone. 9 East 17th St

Drinks & Nightlife

Historic pub (NYC's oldest bar!) with a great atmosphere where you can happily sit at the bar and chat to the (typically Irish barmen). This is a legendary NYC spot. Literally one block away. Full of character, a must for pub fans, and just a great spot for a beer/ hearty pub-style meal. 129 East 18th

A classy little speakeasy that's right across the road, and like stepping back in time - with excellent mixology cocktails, delicious bar snacks, and a Marie Antoinette room out the back that's a must to inspect. It can attract a wait list, so head there early in the week or (or at 5pm to snag a bar seat); otherwise expect a wait. 55 Irving Place. (There's no sign, but the entrance is up the stairs under the awning.

A little Spanish wine and small plates bar with scrumptious cheese, jamon and other delights. This place is the holding pen for Casa Mono (downstairs) but is a fab spot for a vino (they have over 600) in its own right. 125 East 17th (right downstairs, left of entrance).

Essentials

Probably NYC's most economical supermarket, with a huge range of groceries, and a great place to pick up basic necessities - especially if you're on a budget. Either get there early (before 9am) or late in the evening, otherwise you'll get stuck in a line that wraps around the entire store. That's how popular this place is.

A health-focused supermarket with a huge selection of just about everything insanely healthy, and artificial everything free. Also great for fresh fruit and vegetables, but can attract lines depending on your timing.

Right at the end of the street. Drop off your laundry by around 9am, and it's ready to pick up that evening. The charge is per pound. It's economical, they're very reliable, and I use them for everything.

Wine, wine and more wine. These guys have a huuuuge supermarket-sized selection of every vino variety known to man, and huger buying power means the prices are impressively low for NYC.

My personal favorite (mini) supermarket in NYC happens to be right on the corner of 17th St and 3rd Ave. The closest store for urgent essentials, and cooking ingredients, along with a smorgasbord of ready-to-eat meals, soups, dips, salads and gourmet surprises.

Getting Around

This is a major NYC hub for trains. You can get pretty much anywhere from Union Square via the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q and R lines. Just Google Map where you're going, and there's pretty much always a route from Union Square Station. The map places it 4 blocks away, but you can walk just 1 block west to reach subway entry points at the northern end of Union Square.
