Brownsea Island is in Poole Harbour, with spectacular views across to the Purbeck Hills. Take a boat trip from Swanage Pier, or walk on to the ferry to Sandbanks and take the little boat from there. Look for red squirrels and a wide variety of birds.

Dorset plumber Steve Etches became a world renown palaeontologist and his amazing discoveries bringing to life a lost, underwater world that lay beneath the tropical Jurassic seas over 150 million years ago

Try to visit it before 11am or after 4pm for sunset picnics and fewer people. The walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door is up a steep cliff. However to miss the cliff walk you can use your Durdle Door Car Park ticket at Lulworth Cove Car Park.

Our favourite bay... wear hiking boots (rocks are slippery) at low tide spot fossils, ammonites in the rocks, beautiful cliff walks, sunset picnics. Gormley had a sculpture here. Clavells Tower. Location for the film The French Lieutenant's Woman. Surfers check out Magicseaweed dot com for surf reports and webcam. Paying for the car park keeps most of the tourists out but if you go after 4.30pm the car park person has usually gone home.

The Co Op is the largest supermarket in Swanage, spend £5 in store and get a refund for 2 hours parking. It tends to sell out of a lot of things from Friday mid-day to Sunday because of weekenders. If you fancy a cuppa nip into Swanage Train Station's stationary Buffet Car for homemade volunteer's cake and jams or buy an ice cream and eat it on the lawn opposite the train station to watch the trains come and go
