Drinks & Nightlife

Watch the tourists mull about in the Plaza below from your second floor balcony seat while you sample our locally produced beer. This place doesn't serve food, but you can order a pie from Rooftop Pizzeria, easily one of the best in Santa Fe, and have it delivered to your table.

This place was just recently opened by a couple of Santa Fe transplants. The brew their own beer, distill their own booze, and host some great musicians. This place isn't accessible on foot - do yourself a favor and take Uber. DUI laws are very strictly enforced in this town.

With a solid happy hour, daily beer specials, nightly live music and a great outdoor patio, The Cowgirl is a Santa Fe institution. According to my mom, they also have good milk.

Entertainment & Activities

There's only so much eating and drinking you can do in Santa Fe. Here's some fun stuff to fill in the time in between, after you've had your fill of strolling about the magical streets in the Plaza area.
If you want to catch a movie in Santa Fe, the Violet Crown has small theaters and big screens. The restaurant serves up some pretty good chow, they have a good beer selection, and you're welcome to bring it to your seat while you watch the show.

Just a short drive from town, nestled in the mountains on the way to the ski basin, you’ll find Ten Thousand Waves, one of the top-rated spas in the U.S. Come for a massage, or just to soak in the Japanese hot tubs Whatever you do, stay for dinner at Izanami, an izakaya-inspired restaurant that’s one of the best in town.

A little longer drive is Ojo Caliente, an ancient mineral spring and spa, and a great place to spend the afternoon/evening. The bar or the restaurant there are definitely the best game in town for food.

Food scene

To call this place a dive would be a little disrespectful - just don't have any illusions about ambiance here. What you can expect are huge portions of New Mexican comfort food to get your day started.

Dolina stands out as a jewel in Santa Fe's restaurant scene. Not at all fancy, this is a one-of-a-kind restaurant with a huge emphasis on healthy made-from-scratch cooking. When the owner's mom came to visit from the old country, she was quickly put to work cooking soup at Dolina. You can also try some baked goods (made in house) that you've probably never heard of before.

The owner of this newly opened cafe just around the corner on Johnson St. takes great pride in her authentic Venezuelan dishes like arepas, cachapas, and empanadas. Open for breakfast and lunch during the week and dinner on weekends. The Pabellon empanada is one of the best I’ve had!

This is one of my favorite spots in Santa Fe and features local food and craft brews, prepared with care and reasonably priced. The small plates are a great way to try out a couple of dishes. The menu changes seasonally, but pork ribs, straight from a local rancher, are a delicious staple.

This ain’t your tacos and burritos Mexican restaurant. What makes Paloma place stand out, besides the great cocktails, is the cozy ambiance and fresh ingredients. Did I mention that everything is made from scratch, including the tortillas?

Clafoutis is at the top of my list for brunch in Santa Fe. The French owners are always present to keep an eye on things and greet guests with a smile. All baked goods are made in house, and prices and portion sizes are reasonable. Expect a wait on weekends - this place is deservedly popular with locals and tourists alike.

Pass through Los Alamos, home of the Manhattan Project and birthplace of the atomic bomb, on your way to Bandelier National Monument where you can see the remains of the cliff dwellings that used to be home to the ancestral puebloans. Don’t miss the Valles Caldera on the way — signs of humans dating back 11,000 years have been found here. The eruption that create the caldera about 1.2 million years ago scattered rock and ash far across New Mexico and probably extinguished much of life on earth at the time.
