This is Rock Bridge State Park. There are many outlets to it in Columbia, so I labeled most of the images so you will be able to find the trail that will lead you to that particular destination. It’s gorgeous any time of the year. I definitely recommend visiting while you are in town!

This trail is GORGEOUS! It’s a short climb (through the woods) to a spectacular view from atop a bluff in Columbia. From the top you can see little fossils preserved in the rocks, along with miles and miles of trees, and even a lovely creek which rests just below. There is also a walking/biking trail beside the bluff that has a cute little bridge leading to the rest of the hike. This trail is one of my personal favorites.

You’re looking at Eagle Bluff Conservation Area. Another amazing trail for sight seeing! Here, you will be met with an incredibly strenuous climb (there are stairs on the particularly precarious portions) which will lead you to a jaw-dropping view of the Missouri countryside. Along the way you will see beautiful bluffs and, hence the name, you will often see bald eagles flying above the trail. As before mentioned, you will be winded once you reach the top of the bluff, but it is well worth the climb.

This is the M-K-T trail in Missouri. It is the trail that runs along the river and part of it is just behind your cottage. This trail goes always from Missouri to Kentucky and then all the way to Texas. It used to be a rail road track, so it’s fairly easy to navigate and is relatively flat/straight along the route. There are many destinations you can reach along the trail (a few of which are listed in the photos below and are labeled for your convenience) including Rocheport, Missouri; Cooper’s Landing; downtown Columbia; etc. I will elaborate further on these attractions in later portions of the Guidebook. If you decide to bike or walk to these locations it may be a bit of a trek, but the hike is very satisfying and rewarding, nonetheless.

Rocheport Missouri is a small, historic town accessible via M-K-T trail from Easley (which is the trail just behind the cottage). In this town you can visit lovely antique shops, art shops, Wineries, and restaurants that are always delightful after a day of hiking. You can also stop of the higher-end Restaurants for a Classy night out if you travel by car.

A stop by Mizzou Campus is always a pleasant time! You can walk around the Francis Quadrangle (a beautiful, historic section of the campus) and then explore downtown, as well. There are many dessert shops, book stores, restaurants, and bars down town that a short walk from the Quadrangle that are enjoyable any time of year. I will include a few of my favorite attractions later on in the guidebook.

The Yellow Dog Bookshops is a Quaint, locally owned shop on Ninth Street in downtown Columbia. It’s small and quiet, and is a great stop for lightly thrifted books.

The Skylark Bookshop is right next door to the before mentioned Yellow Dog Bookshop. It is a newer establishment that is a little bit bigger and has a wider selection of books. It’s always pleasant to visit both shops and then find a nice place to read (and the skylark bookshop always has comfy places to plop down in with a book… including a secret nook on the upper level)

Cooper’s Landing is a relaxing campground and marina where anyone can visit by car or they can travel by foot/bike via the M-K-T trail (which is just behind the cottage). Here you can listen to live music (but check the schedule before you head there for music), eat some delicious food, and enjoy the Missouri River. It’s a great way to get away from city life and enjoy a few of Missouri’s beautiful, natural wonders.

Sparky’s is a quirky, little icecream shop with some classic and some odd flavors which is a Columbia Favorite. They always have fresh, homemade sweets to satisfy your tastebuds, and plenty of hand painted pieces of art covering the walls to keep you entertained while you eat. On a nice night you can even enjoy outdoor seating in the center of downtown Columbia.

D. Rowes is an upscale bar and grill 10-15 minutes away from the Cottages where the food and environment never disappoint. It’s a great place to watch a sports game and enjoy anything from a nice cheeseburger to a classy pasta dish.

Addison’s is the sister restaurant to Sophia’s (an Italian place previously mentioned in the guidebook). It is an upscale grill with a wide variety of quality food sufficient for a date night or a night out on the town. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in the city because it is right in the heart of downtown Columbia and the food is always incredible (I recommend the steaks by the way).

Murray’s is a classy, yet affordable, restaurant less than ten minutes from the cottage. They have anything from fried catfish to classic fettuccini Alfredo, but nearly everything you order will exceed your expectations. They even have live music in the evenings on most occasions!

Shakespeare’s is a Columbia favorite, and you can visit one of their locations most anywhere in the city. Their original location is in downtown Columbia, but they have a new branch just a few minutes away from the cottage! Here you can get fresh, home made pizza, some Icecream, and even drinks if you are feeling up to it. You can also ask for wads of dough for the kids to play with while waiting for your food.

If you’re looking for a sweet treat to bring home, I recommend Peggy Jean’s Pies! It is a great, locally owned shop with home made pies (large or small). They even offer pies for half off if they were made the day before!

Pierpont General is a historic general store/restaurant/bar/gas station mere minutes from the cottage (in fact you probably saw it on your way there). At Pierpont you can enjoy locally sourced food, outdoor seating, and fun treats for your family. This store was built over 200 years ago, and still runs out of the original building! It’s always a fun trip, and the whole family will be entertained if you decide to stop by.
