Just about .8 miles from here, walk through the Island Cemetery on Warner Street. Walk in and head straight away toward the chapel. This chapel was constructed in 1886 by Mr and Mrs August Belmont, Sr. (Of The Famous Belmont Stakes Horse Race in NY). The chapel was a memorial to their daughter, Jane Pauline Belmont. Given as a gift, the chapel’s purpose was to hold a committal service before burial. It is slowly being restored and preserved. Make your way toward Farewell Street and view the stones in and around the Common Burial Ground. Island Cemetery is listed as RI’s first Historical Cemetery….and one that is the only active cemetery in Newport. It is listed on the National Register of Historic sites and is one of Newport’s 15 arboreta’s and is open to the public, all faiths and heritage.

Beautiful walking, hiking trails for viewing many bird species. Easy climbing. Most common hike is out on the famous Hanging Rock Trail. Land was donated by Mable Norman, youngest of 9 children from Newport. She studied art in NYC and Boston extensively. Met her husband Dr George Cerio in Italy and they spent their time between Italy and Newport until the start of the Great War.

Doris Duke's Mansion! A must see on a rainy day. Not related and associated or to be confused with the Preservation Society of Newport however, totally worth walking through her home and grounds of the sole American heiress, socialite, horticulturalist, art collector, and philanthropist.
