Definitely worth the 40-minute drive to Big Timber. Four-star restaurant with excellent rack of lamb carved table side. Also many vegetarian options. Great wine selections for any budget. Mocha mud pie or anything off the desert cart is worthy of splurging!

Gardiner was hard hit by the historic flood of June 2022 but they are resilient and thriving. Worth the one-hour drive for lots of great shops, restaurants, the Roosevelt Arch, wildlife viewing, rafting and fishing.

The trail to Elephanthead Mountain (forest trail #37) is a favorite hike for many in the Livingston/Big Timber area. The Elephanthead trail is in the headwaters of Mission Creek which comes out of the Absaroka Mountains and runs into the Yellowstone River east of Livingston. The trail is part of the Custer Gallatin National Forest and it’s easy to reach the Elephanthead trailhead from either Livingston or Big Timber. However, most come in from the Livingston side as the road from Big Timber is a long drive on a gravel road. https://www.montanahikes.com/elephanthead-mountain/ Wherever you hike, always be bear aware and pack a can of bear spray!

You will not be disappointed if you plan a day at Fairy Lake. Get there early though because it's become a popular place. Don't forget to be bear aware and pack your bear spray!
