Bicycling in San Diego

Bicycling in San Diego

Sightseeing

If you bicycle the whole loop, which includes a beautiful ferry ride from Coronado to downtown SD (or vice-versa), it's 24 miles. That takes about 3 hours if you don't stop for lunch or to sightsee along the way (but you won't be able to resist!). OR, you can just bike up and down the Silver Strand which links Coronado with Imperial Beach (ocean on one side and bay on the other). It's a great ride either way! Paul and I usually drive to Barrio Logan and park our car near Chicano Park (check out the murals!), then we bike south on Harbor Blvd (putting the most traffic-laden part of the ride behind us first) towards Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, then looping up the Silver Strand and into Coronado, the trail leads right to the Ferry dock ($5 one-way) and over to either Seaport Village or the Convention Center. Then you ride back south on Harbor to your car, maybe making a taco stop in Barrio Logan before leaving.

Most of this ride has an 8mph max posted on the trails, so it's slow and relaxed! Enjoy the breeze and soak up the sun (or, put on tons of sunscreen and wear spf clothing, like me). The loop around the bay actually consists of 3 bike trails that connect, which makes about 12 miles total. Paul and I like to park our car at the Southshore Boat launch parking lot (near Seaworld) and head either over past Fiesta Island or the other way, which crosses the street to old seaworld drive. This ride circles the whole of Mission Bay.

Hydrobikes!?! I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like a bicycle/boat hybrid. A jet-ski without the jet. You can rent other water craft at this location, but the Hydrobike is the coolest. This is a short bicycle ride away from the parking lot I mentioned in the Mission Bay bike trail recommendation, or just park on Quivera and start your ride from there, and end with a Hydrobike rental. Sounds like a good day!

Liberty Station is on the grounds of the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma. It's a great place to take the family for an easy, casual bicycle ride. There is a bike rental place right on the Historic Decatur Rd. next to the Liberty Public Market (like an indoor food truck court, with all types of food). This ride can be on the streets and/or trails, taking you past old barracks that have been transformed into retail space, restaurants, art galleries and artists workspaces, museums, and lots of outdoor art!

Start the bike ride from our house and take the Trolley back

We like to ride from our house, through downtown La Mesa, out on either University or El Cajon Blvd towards the beaches or Balboa Park or anywhere! Use Google maps and it will give you good bicycling options to your destination. Make sure you end up within a couple of miles from a Trolley stop! Take the Orange line back to the La Mesa Blvd stop, which is the easiest to bike back here from.
