Delicious for any meal but a standout for brunch. If you don't have a reservation you'll typically have to find space at the bar or wait around for a bit - they typically underpromise and overdeliver on the wait times. Head over to Union Kitchen half a block away while you wait.

Right across the street, The Royal is a Michelin-reviewed restaurant that is great for brunch, dinner, and after-dinner drinks. The vibe is laid back and artisanal. Reservations recommended, but you can often find space at the bar.

One of the best restaurants in DC and (given that metric) reasonably priced. Cozy environment and superlative Italian food. To guarantee no wait you'll need to reserve a couple weeks ahead of time (unless you're willing to eat at 5:15pm or 9:00pm), but they also hold tables every day for walk-ins.

I'll admit I've never eaten in the restaurant (though I hear it's fantastic!) but this quickly became my go-to pizza delivery spot. Really well-done, gourmet pizzas to fit all tastes and a reliable selection of appetizers and sides. The "dippies" are not essential, but do greatly elevate the pizza experience. Washington Post's food correspondent recently (April 2023) named it one of his six favorite places to eat since it expanded its menu to include more non-pizza fare.

This small neighborhood favorite serves up both classic American and mouth-watering Ethiopian dishes, with large portions and fair prices. Try the Ethiopian breakfast or the hash brown breakfast sandwich, and don't forget the green sauce.

A good spot for a quick breakfast sandwich, with enough variety to satisfy a wide range of tastes.

Okay, if you are looking for the best and most authentic Korean barbecue the DMV district can offer, you have to make the trek out to Annandale, VA (it's worth it!). But if you just want some very tasty Korean barbecue that's close to home and good for groups even without reservations, head to Gogi Yogi. I've only ordered from the "ayce - all you can eat" menu, which is only a few dollars more expensive than the a la carte options and which offers quite a satisfying selection even at the cheapest (option A) level (though option B is probably worth the extra $10 if you're a hungry enthusiast).

This was previously a pop-up spot just a couple blocks from the townhouse, but alas, its success allowed it to move to a new, dedicated location a good 15-20 minute walk away. If you just want to grab a satisfying breakfast sandwich on your way to a busy day of work or sightseeing I'd recommend the more-convenient Cracked Eggery, but if you're in the mood for a stroll, butter me up is still my favorite quick breakfast spot in the city. My favorite is the "Feels Like Home" with fried chicken, meltingly soft scrambled eggs, and a not-so-spicy special sauce. My friend relies on the classic "Easy Like Sunday" with sausage, eggs, cheese, and honey mustard aioli.

Great local brewery right next to Howard Theater with atmospheric outdoor seating. Gets busy during popular times. I recommend the Raised by Wolves Pale Ale; the wings are also well worth it.

Okay, the tasting menu is $95 ($60 for a drink pairing) and reservations can be hard to come by, but this is one of DC's standouts for a special occasion meal. The only options are vegetarian, vegan, or veg/vegan with oysters, but I know a few avid meat-lovers who swear by this place. The secret is now out - they got a Michelin star in 2022 and a couple James Beard nominations for best chef.

This is not amazing pizza, but it is cheap, steps from the townhouse, and open late. They're also quite serious about their vegan and gluten-free options (using separate utensils to prevent cross-contamination, at least on the gluten-free options). Buy a whole pizza or take it by the slice; takeout only.

This place really embodies the maxim to do one thing and do it well. They basically offer different a few different types of fish burgers/tacos (with a big selection of condiments and fixings, and some variation depending on the availability of what's good) from super-high-quality sources, plus a few sides. There are a few tables to eat inside, but I've only ever done takeout.

Iconic, must check-out venue right down the street. Originally opened in 1910, it was renovated and re-opened in 2012 and now hosts a variety of music acts. They sell food, but recommend noshing at Right Proper right next door instead.

Not to be confused with the National Museum of African American History and Culture (more comprehensive and a bit further away on the mall), this smaller museum and monument honors the contributions of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and the critical role they played through its extremely well-curated permanent exhibits, guided tours, and events. Just a few blocks away from the townhouse.

This grocery store offers a general basic grocery selection but tilts towards more niche Latin American and Asian products (I know those are super broad categories, but Capitol Supermarket really does span a gamut of products that are not likely to be found in your normal Safeway or Giant, without specializing to the degree of Korean/Brazilian/Japanese/etc. markets you might find in other cities). Prices tend to be more affordable (for the area) than the chain grocery stores, and the shopping experience is commensurately basic.
