Now known as Whiskey Creek Station, this is the place the locals stop for a beer or a bite to eat. It's close enough to walk if you'd like.

This themed dining experience is inspired by none other than the infamous Al Capone. The decor is one-of-a-kind, and the menu is fantastic. You won't be disappointed by their coal-fired pizza. My personal favorite is the Cajun Chicken and Shrimp Pasta. It's very spicy, but worth every bite. I do not recommend the sangria here. It tastes a bit like syrup. However, you can't go wrong with a glass of wine.

This pizza place isn't too far down the road. While their pizza is good, I prefer to order their Italian Beef. As a native Chicagoan, it's difficult to find a good Italian Beef, but this one comes close to the real thing.

Cristof's is a local favorite. The portions are large and the restaurant has that old Florida feel. My favorite part is the bread and oil they bring to the table before the entree. There's something special about the dipping oil. I've even tried to replicate the taste at home.

Off the beaten path in Downtown Fort Myers. The Italian owners brought the taste of Brooklyn to Fort Myers. Their authentic Italian dishes are often highlighted in a local news segment on ABC7 called "Cooking with Cal." I've eaten their Lobster Ravioli and cannot wait to go back.

Don't let the strip mall location fool you. Crave has the best breakfast/brunch in Fort Myers. I've been blown away by the taste of their coffee and bloody mary's. You have to try their potato wedge hashbrown. I've never seen it replicated anywhere else. Crave also has dinner options, but I haven't sampled that menu.

This is a great place to spend an afternoon outside. There's a long walking path and a beautiful garden area. You can also rent bikes and paddle boats. There are gators in the water, so be careful!

This is a planned community in Charlotte County that has branded itself "The Hometown of Tomorrow." It's an environmentally conscious community run on solar power. You don't have to live there to visit. They have dining and outdoor space to explore. There's also a Food Truck night.

Just 10 years ago, there were limited dining options in the River District, but now they are plentiful. Take a walk down First Street and sample some of the local restaurants in between stops at local shops.

City/town information

This is it if you're looking for a funky little beach town. There are plenty of dining options along the water. The gulf temperature is going to be warm this time of year. The earlier you get there, the easier it is to find parking. Prices vary by lot, time of year and whether there's an event going on.

There's more to Sanibel Island than the beach. Rent a bike and explore this charming, clean, upscale destination on the water. Beware! The toll to enter Sanibel is $6.

When Dining out for Dinner

Even though it's the off-season, some restaurants are still very busy. If you're eating dinner at peak dinner hours, I recommend making a reservation, just in case.

Safety in the environment

Alligators may live in or around any body of water, so be on alert when exploring lakes or ponds. It's rare to see them at the beach. Mosquitoes are abundant, especially during rainy season. Use bug spray! And don't forget to re-apply sunscreen often.
