According to legend, Lake Winnipesaukee got its name as “the smile of the Great Spirit” because of the love of two Native Americans. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire, located in the Lakes Region at the foothills of the White Mountains. It is approximately 21 miles long and from 1 to 9 miles wide, covering 69 square miles —71 square miles when Paugus Bay is included—with a maximum depth of 180 feet.

Known as the City of Lakes. The town's name was likely taken from the name of the original company formed by the Captain John Mason and the Masonian proprietors in order to sell parcels to the original colonists during the colonial era: the Laconia Company. The shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnesquam, Opechee Bay and Paugus Bay all fall within Laconia. Also the village of Lakeport and Weirs Beach.
