Sightseeing

The wild center is a wonderful interactive museum. We take all of our out of town guests here. It’s roughly an hour and a half or less from the house, and well worth the drive. Well suited for kids and adults alike. They have everything from an indoor display of otters and native plants and fish to a beautiful, elevated outdoor walkway and musical woods. Take note there is an admission fee.

If you have time, we highly recommend a trip to Montreal. It is roughly 2 1/2 hours away. That being said you could still easily make a day trip, which we are certain will turn into a longer return trip. The air museum is delightful.

In the woods and water

Here is a list of our favorite, hiking, climbing, and beach spots in the area. This list starts closest to the house and moves further to the location as you go down the list.
This is the best hike in the local area. It follows the Raquette River from Hannawa Falls to Colton at around a 3 mile one-way hike. It is very beautiful walk through a variety of different terrain. It has informative signs along the trail telling you about the area you are standing. The majority of people hate this trail in one of three ways: 1. Park at the Lenny Road trail head and walk to either one of the two camping areas and turn around or all the way to Colton and walk back. 2. Bring two vehicles and park one at the Lenny Road trail head and the other one at the Colton fire station trail head and do a one-way hike. (This is our favorite. We usually grab a beer and lunch at the racquet River pub after the hike;) 3. Hike the roughly 7 mile Loop. This is a good hike, but only one side of the trail, Lenny Road trail head, follows the river the whole way. The other side is more of a walk through the woods. Don’t get me wrong, they are both beautiful, but the hike along the river is taken 10 to 1.

This is a local favorite. It is a nice short hike to a waterfall swimming area. Kids and adults usually slide down the gradual face of the waterfall and cool off in the swimming area below.

Easy/moderate difficulty 1 mile hike with a fire tower you can assess. Great view and about an hour drive. And yes, you can climb to the top of the fire tower and take in the beautiful view from miles in all directions.

Moderate/difficult 3 miles, each way, hike with fantastic 360° views. Well worth the effort. This is one of my favorites. It is one of the high peaks largest little brothers. you can get here from the house in about an hour. The peak is bald with wonderful fuse in all directions. When you’re done, walk across the street and walk down the trail in the parking area. Roughly a half a mile later you are standing at a sandy beach where you can swim and cool off after the long hike.

This is a great, moderate uphill hike. Not awfully long, I believe it is around 1 mile. It has wonderful views from the fire Tower.

Beaches and parks

Our favorite beaches and parks
Arguably the best little beach in the area. This is a beautiful park with a nice picnic area with grills sitting above the beach where you can cook, and watch your children playing on the beach and in the water. In the winter, there is an outdoor ice-skating rink. It also has a year-round rental program. In the summer you can check out baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls, and in the winter you can check out snowshoes, ice, skates, and cross-country skis. All for free.

This is a really cool area. It is historic, unique, and a really cool beach. This is located in Long Lake, which is about an hour and a half away. This is more of a day trip scenario. Here’s how we normally do. We drive the hour and a half to long lake, grab lunch at the long lake inn, then hit the beach with its cool swim platforms and maybe take a guided plane tour over the Adirondacks.
