Hiking

Standing approximately 150 feet high, the cliffs overlook Buck Run, which spills from above as a waterfall and flows over a portion of the cliffs. Erosion from the waterfall has created the deep valley, steep cliffs, and rock shelter beneath. Visitors can access Cantwell Cliffs by way of two trails, the valley floor trail or the rim trail. Those who choose the East Rim Trail will be rewarded by a scenic view of the cliff and rock shelter at Lookout Point. Hikers approaching the rock shelter will find that the trail winds its way through narrow passageways caused by large slump blocks that have fallen away from the main cliff.

The largest recess cave in Ohio, measuring nearly 700 feet from end to end, 100 feet deep, and 90 feet from floor to roof. Hikers visiting Ash Cave approach through a tree-lined gorge and valley floor rich with native wildflowers. A tributary of the East Fork of Queer Creek, which created Ash Cave, still flows over the rim forming a pool below. Visitors will note that the cave is not only enormous in size, but also possesses incredible acoustic qualities.

One of Ohio’s most popular natural history attractions. Located on Queer Creek, the falls drops approximately 50 feet into the ravine, and is the largest waterfall by volume in the Hocking Hills region. Accessing the falls, hikers pass through a chasm thick with hemlock trees, lined by steep rock walls, grottos, and additional waterfalls. Visitors to the falls have characterized the area as “wild and lonely, but spectacularly beautiful.” The Democracy Steps, leading down to the falls, were created by Akio Hizume. Drawing from his love of nature, Hizume, an artist, architect, and mathematician, designed a staircase that descended gently down the hillside nearly 100 steps long. Visitors to Cedar Falls will find a picnic area and latrines located within a short walk from the falls.

One of the most scenic natural history regions in the state, the sheer sandstone cliffs rise nearly 200 feet above the lushly covered valley floor. There you’ll find a profusion of native plants, wildflowers, and hardwood forests so thick little or no sunlight reaches the floor in some places. The trail leading up the narrow, half-mile ravine is surrounded by cliffs towering over 200 feet above and can be 300 feet or less from cliff to cliff in certain areas. At the top visitors are treated with magnificent views from some of the highest cliffs in Hocking Hills State Park. Experienced hikers may want to try the rim trail above the gorge. For an easier hike, the lower gorge trail was recently designed to accommodate visitors of all abilities.

One of Ohio’s most popular natural history attractions and is unique to the area because it’s the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park. The cave is named for its close resemblance of a house, and has been used as such for centuries. It sits halfway up a 150 foot Black Hand sandstone cliff and is approximately 25 feet high, 200 feet long, and 20-30 feet wide. Visitors to Rock House will notice 7 window-like openings that allow sunlight to travel into the cave, along with several large sandstone columns that support the cave’s roof.

Sightseeing

The Clear Creek Metro Park, part of the Franklin County Metro Parks system, is one of the most pristine and secluded natural areas in Central Ohio. The park extends the length of the Clear Creek Valley, extending from the confluence of Clear Creek and the Hocking River in the East, and the town of Revenge, OH in the West. The Clear Creek Valley is the product of glacial flooding, cutting the valley through the surrounding Black Hand sandstone. Ongoing erosion has created an extremely rugged terrain with many steep ravines, rock outcroppings, and cliff faces which overlook the Clear Creek. A mix of prairie in the West and Appalachian forest in the East, the park is home to Ohio’s last remaining colonies of Rhododendron, while also consisting of Canadian hemlocks and ferns and Oak and Hickory trees. Due to overlapping geological and climactic zones, the geography of Clear Creek has produced unique habitats for more than 1,200 native plant species. With more than 15 miles of trails, visitors may encounter many different animal species including turkey, deer, grouse, coyote, black vultures, beaver, and bobcat.

A project of the Friends of the Hocking Hills State Park, a non-profit (501c3) membership organization for people who love the Hocking Hills and take special interest in improving Park features and preserving it for the enjoyment of future generations. An astronomy park in the Hocking Hills State park was inspired by our vanishing night sky. The Hocking Hills, in rural southeastern Ohio, is one of the few areas left in the state of Ohio where the night sky can be seen in its near pristine state. The observatory will provide a venue for visitors to the Hocking Hills State park to experience the night sky through a large telescope and with their own eyes.
