In 1855, the U.S. Army established Fort Stanton as an Infantry and Cavalry post in the east-central New Mexico Territory to protect settlers in the region. It has 88 buildings made of local stone, featuring officers’ quarters, a hospital, a morgue, a guardhouse, a dining hall, a chapel, a gymnasium, and horse stables. It played a significant role in the Indian and Civil Wars. Its 160-year history covers Billy the Kid’s lawless days, the Lincoln County War, the epidemic in the 1920s, and the internment of German sailors during World War II.
Within the NCA is Fort Stanton Cave, at over 31 miles, it is the second longest cave in New Mexico, the 14th longest cave in the U.S., the 62th longest in the world, and the largest cave managed by the BLM. Snowy River is a significant passage within Fort Stanton Cave, and is the longest cave formation in the world.

More than twenty years went into the building of St. Joseph Apache Mission. It was mainly the inspiration and work of Father Albert Braun, O.F.M.
Father Albert served as a Chaplain in World War II and survived three and a half years as a prisoner of war in the Philippines. After the war, Fr. Albert returned to Mescalero and rededicated St. Joseph Apache Mission to the veterans of both World Wars.
The Mission is laid out in the form of a cross. It is 64 feet wide and 131 feet long. It is 50 feet to the rafters, and 80 feet to the roof peak. The tip of the cross on the bell tower is 103 feet high. The bell tower walls are four feet thick at the base.

Green chile cheeseburgers are a dime a dozen across the Land of Enchantment, and you may think you’ve tried them all. But there is one roadside diner in New Mexico, in the tiny town of Capitan, that offers arguably the best one in the state. In fact, it’s won awards. But there is far more than just a delicious burger that makes this diner worthy of a pit stop.
Fairly new to the New Mexico restaurant scene having opened in 2015, you'll find Oso Grill nestled along Highway 380, in a valley between the Capitan and Sacramento Mountains. You might not expect much from a tiny town like this, but if you pass through the area, you owe it to yourself to stop at this highly-rated (and for good reason!) little diner.
When you step inside this adorable diner, you'll find that it is filled with natural light and delightful aromas, making you feel right at home. Visitors of the Oso Grill rave about the upbeat yet inviting atmosphere, the attentive service, and the cleanliness. So, grab a menu and a seat, and prepare for a wonderful dining experience.
We’re going to cut right to the chase and let you know that the Poblano Pepper Soup with Smoked Cheddar Bread Pudding is the appetizer you’re going to want to try first. Prepare for an invigorating explosion of flavor and zest to wake up the tastebuds. Alternatively, the Fried Green Chile strips or the Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers are guest favorites.
The arugula and spinach salad with champagne dressing make for a light but refreshing salad to enjoy as a second course while you prepare for the main entrée to arrive. Other salad options include the Oso Berry, the Chef, or the Steak or Chicken salads.

If you're lucky, and the New York strip steak happens to be offered on special while you’re visiting, this is an extremely delicious and tender steak you will absolutely love. It is drizzled in red pepper marmalade and comes with fingerling potatoes, shaved root vegetables, and fried shallots. If it happens to not be on special when you visit or if you're looking for a seafood option, the Catfish is to die for and gets rave reviews from guests.
Now, Amara's homemade crackers served with fried dill Havarti, candied jalapeños, apple butter, smoked cheddar cheese, fresh grapes, and toasted pecans is a light (but yummy) menu option to consider as you wrap up the meal. But this fourth course may only be offered during special holiday occasions, such as Valentine’s Day, so be sure to call ahead and ask if this dish is going to be offered during your visit. Otherwise, the Fry Bread or Root Beer Floats offer the perfect palate cleanse to end your dining experience just right.
