Mount Jumbo Trail is the closest trail to the Airbnb and I'd say this is one of the more strenuous hikes (if you go all the way to the top). If you go to the top, you'll find a truly amazing view of Juneau and the surrounding area. You can also hike just 15 minutes up to the meadow which is a bit of a climb to a beautiful spot, but not a full commitment to the day hike.

Treadwell Ditch Trail is one of my favorites! You can connect with it from Mount Jumbo Trail and then you follow the ditch which was built in the early 1900's to collect and divert water to generate electricity for the Treadwell Mine in Douglas. This is trail that starts near our home via the Mount Jumbo Trail just before the meadow and ends 14 miles later near the Eaglecrest Ski Area parking lot. There are many places to connect with the trail along the way including Gastineau Meadows, Blueberry Hill, and Bonnie Brae. If you have any questions about hiking this trail please let me know. I love that this trail is long and level. It's a great one for getting dropped off at one of the connecting points and then ending up back at our place.

This is a trail that goes into a historic mining area at the end of Basin Road in downtown Juneau. It climbs uphill (steep at first then a pleasant gradual increase) alongside Gold Creek. You'll see scenic waterfalls, streams, plants, trees, and likely wildlife.

Mount Juneau Trail is accessed via Perseverance Trail/Basin Road. This is one of the more strenuous day hikes in Juneau with breath taking views that really pay off. This is a gorgeous hike for a sunny day with awesome perspectives of downtown, Douglas, and once you get to the top you can see the Mendenhall Valley and Chilkat Mountain Range.

Sheep Creek Trail is one of my absolute favorite trails even though I'm embarrassed to admit I've never hiked the entire trail. After a 30 minute climb to get you warmed up, you hike through a lush and level valley along Sheep Creek for 45-60 minutes. In this valley if you look up at the mountains you'll likely be able to spot mountain goats climbing around the rocks up high. At the end of the valley, you'll continue climbing upwards. The views are amazing if you go for it!

Mount Roberts Trail is a nice intermediate trail as it is uphill but relatively quick. It takes most people 45 minutes to get from the trailhead on Basin Road to Mount Roberts Tramway where you can get a beer and a tram ride down. Or you can keep hiking up to the giant cross that overlooks downtown Juneau and Douglas. Keep hiking and it goes on for quite a while along Gold Ridge.

This is one of my favorite easy trails when you know the weather is great somewhere in Juneau but not around our house. A 25 minute drive out North Douglas will take you to a much drier, sunnier ecosystem. This level hike loops from the parking lot to the beach and back. The beach has lovely views of Auke Bay and the Chilkat mountains. This is a great place to go for sunset.

This trail is the next parking area down from Rainforest Trail. Falser Outer Point is another relatively level loop that goes to the beach and back. In my personal opinion this one is even better than Rainforest Trail (you can park in one spot and hit both loops in one hike and end up back at your car). It passes by beaver ponds, meadow, boardwalks that appear to float over streams, and pops in and out of gorgeous beach areas. Local tips: If you go at sunset you'll usually see beaver activity on the main pond. If you go during a super low tide you can walk across the exposed land bridge out to Shaman Island for some excellent low tide exploration. Check the tide table to plan your trip.

Sandy Beach is located in Douglas below out house on the water. If you love dogs, you will run into quite a few here as it is an unofficial dog park. This is also a great place for families to hang out on sunny days. On clear summer evenings, sandy beach is a great place to gather wood, have a bonfire and roast some hot dogs and s'mores.

Drive to the end of Industrial Blvd in the valley and you'll find a trailhead many locals refer to as "The Bad Dogs Trail". This is where people go for dog walks. This trail goes through the wetlands and has amazing views of Mendenhall Glacier if you stand along the river. At low tide you can walk pretty far out into the wetlands. This trail is right next to the airport so it's also fun to stand below the flight path as the flights come and go.

Drinks

Louie's is a local watering hole that is an easy 10 minute walk from our place. It is recently renovated and is a great place to drink beers and cocktails alongside locals. They often have events and live music on the weekends. There is a back patio with firepit if you're looking for an outdoor space.

This is hands down my favorite place to get a drink in Juneau. Locally owned, operated, and distilled! I am biased but the gin is delicious and the cocktails served on site are creative and herbal. Open daily 1-8pm with a 2 drink daily limit. You might find yourself going back multiple days during your stay. Not only are the drinks great but it's a beautiful space, they have local merchandise, and lots of non-alcoholic options as well.

Visit the Red Dog Saloon, a delightfully kitschy summer tourist attraction! This bar has somehow found the ability to be a tourist landmark and a place locals enjoy going in the off-season (especially during Folk Fest in April). The walls and ceilings are covered with animal mounts, gold rush memorabilia, signed dollar bills, and much more.

Favorite Restaurants

The Island pub is a 10 minute walk or 2 min drive from the Airbnb. the pizza is excellent (it's even been featured on a TV show) and I personally love their margaritas. My husband's favorite is The Don. I love getting the pizza skins and salmon dip. This restaurant is a local favorite.

In the winter, Eaglecrest Ski Area is a small, nearly sea-level ski area that offers world class skiing. Excellent terrain, variable snow conditions, and friendly locals.
