One of the most notable architectural legacies of Geoffrey Bawa A true testament to the prolific Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa, Lunuganga Estate was once his elegant country home that continues to embody his renowned aesthetics of tropical living that inspired many of Sri Lanka’s finest spaces. Located on the banks of the Dedduwa Lake, the name Lunuganga translates to ‘salt river’ in Sinhala, despite serving as a cinnamon plantation during the Dutch period, and then a rubber plantation during the British period. Bawa later acquired the 15-acre estate in 1949 and designed a rustic bungalow adorned with enchanting gardens – the grounds of which were often considered an experimental ground for him to explore a number of architectural charms which are characteristic of the estate.

Established in the year 1734, Kande Viharaya is one of the most popular Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. Being located up in the hills, the serenity that surrounds the temple celebrates one of the most peace-loving philosophies of the world. The relic chamber of the temple is believed to be the oldest structure in the temple. Its walls are adorned with Kandyan Era frescoes while murals illustrating Lord Buddha’s life are depicted across the temple. Subsequent to a few rounds of renovation under state patronage, Kande Viharaya is today formally recognised as an archaeological site. Every step into this temple in its most scenic atmosphere feels like the unravelling of a beautiful story.

Moragalla Beach is a haven for beachgoers who seek a secluded beach holiday in Sri Lanka as it is mostly calm and not crowded. This a stretch of sandy haven adjoins the estuary of the Bentota River, otherwise known as the Bentara River. The sea around the Moragalla is quite shallow due to the underwater coral reef that lies not far from the coastline. It has clear blue water and is a perfect place for sports activities such as windsurfing, diving, and snorkeling, among others. The lovely clean sandy beach is great for long walks and to watch the mesmerizing sunset. Right in front of the beach, there is a small hill that seems like an island but actually, it is the tip of the panhandle that forms the Bentota Beach. There is a small temple on top of the hill covered in thick woods. The small temple doesn't have much going on but it is situated in such a tranquil environment which is perfect for meditation. In fact, it is part of a Yoga ashram called 'Moragalla Dharmadheevpa'. One can easily catch a boat and ride to the temple. Visitors need to climb up some cement made stairs in order to reach the temple.
