Restaurants, Cafés,

My favorite places to go out for coffee or something to eat.
Check out the bio market by local farmers on tuesday or friday morning at Rathausplatz / piazza Municipio. (In the winter it is on piazza Domenicani/ Dominikanerplatz) They sell vegetables or fruit of the season. Sometimes you can find fresh eggs and flowers and even honey, speck, bread and "Kaminwurzen": the south Tyrolean kind of Salami: you have to taste it if you eat meat.

Traditional South Tyrolean kitchen for a fair price. This is the place where my grandparents, and my grandparents parents already went to ;) And still, I find it tastes fine ;) It's an authentic place and especially in winter it can be very crowded. So best to book a table or go there early (11.30 AM or around 6,6.30 in the evening).

Beer made in Bozen combined with burgers, spare ribs and MEAT of all kind. I am not the fan of the kitchen, but this place is known for its Craft Beer and during summer time people enjoy the outside courtyard. There is a small dance venue too. This is a place loved by young people and crowded on friday night. So this is the place to meet and greet Bolzano ;)

Most of the bars in Bozen offer a nice drink in the summer evenings. But this bar (formerly called Franz bar, now Insere Bar) offers a little extra: delicious little sandwiches of every type. This made the bar famous amongst the locals :)

This hidden place is known amongst the local people. With a small playground, good wine and food it's a perfect place to hang out, taste some wines from their winery. You see it's a place where people still work and make wine. I find it very authentic and friendly. Nice little walk there!

Buy the best homemade knödel / canederli here. Just put then 15min in nearly boiling water and enjoy the traditional south tyrolean dish.

Avalon is worth a walk. The homemade ice cream is a dream! It's not a big place to sit down. The ice cream is to take away. Made by a variety of ingredients, always fresh. A summer evening highlight of us Bolzaninis ;) (Saturday and Sunday closing hours in summer: 7.30PM otherwise 9.30PM)

Tiffany is a nice place for having a drink, a lunch or an aperitivo in the evening. Why always hang out in the historic city center? It's worth a walk to this district.

Known and hidden places you should visit in Bozen
Maybe at first sight it's not the most impressive building. But please go in. Find a little door on your right at the end of the church at the right and you come to this painted chapel. A masterpiece to my opinion ;)

Close to the Walther Square you can find the COS store. On the last floor you can discover (for free and in complete tranquillity) rooms from old times with nice frescos. A perfect combination of a little shopping, history and art ;)

A medieval castle with world famous frescos! Here you can travel back in time, see the first button (huge invention in the medieval times), dancers of medieval King Arthur and his friends. Really worth a trip. Reachable with a shuttle bus, bike or on a wonderful, easy walking path.

Nature in Bozen Town

Nice walks starting from the Rosa Residence
I often enjoy going for a walk here in the afternoon or after office. How to get here From the city follow the Talferpromenade to its end and turn right. Shortly after, the hiking trail begins on the left side, which leads up with many serpentines. (I recommend good shoes and don't forget water!) At the top, enjoy the view from one of the many benches. Follow the trail back down to town. Quiet streets lead you back to the city centre. Best for a romantic walk during sunset ;)

Go for a walk at Bolzano's champs Elysées ;) Enjoy a walk under the shadows of the large trees, grab a coffee on your way, lay in the sun and enjoy the mountains and views on the old castles! How to get here: Exit the Rosa Residence, turn left, cross the street and get on the walking path, where you turn right. Turn right before the bridge. Now follow this path along the river, the Talfer. You will pass under two bridges. After the second bridge the park begins and on the right hand side the promenade with the big trees.

Meine liebsten Ausflugsziele

An absolute insider tipp! Just 10mins with the train from Bolzano the Trostburg offers a travel back in time. Here lived one of the most famous singer songwriters of the 14th century, Oswald von Wolkenstein. See an impressive architecture, some very rare paintings and art treasures! This is to my opinion one of the most beautiful but unfortunately one of the most unknown castles in South Tyrol. You can enter at 11AM, 2 and 3PM with a guided tour in German and Italian for 8€ from Easter to October. How to get here: Get the train in direction Brenner. Get of at Waidbruck / Ponte Gardena. From here it's a 20min's walk (steep) to the castle. Find more infos here: https://www.suedtirolerland.it/en/highlights/castles-mansions/trostburg-castle/ Bring goed shoes, water and food.

Lake Montiggl is a wonderful place that I like to visit especially in the morning or early evening. You can go to the Lido until 6pm and also use the swimming pool. There is a path around the lake and several places where you can go into the water from the rocks. In the morning it is still quiet and meditative. You can rent rowing boats or stand up paddles at the Lido. There are also beautiful walks to the small Montiggl lake, where you can also swim and eat. Take the bus 131 or 132 to Eppan/Appiano, get of at the station of Eppan and from there another bus to the lake. Also a popular destination for a bike tour. A beautiful cycle path leads from Bolzano to Montiggl.

It's no the most crowded, stylish and fancy place. And we like it cause of this. Always enjoyed the food, the breeze, the simplicity and the view. Perfect on a warm summer day! Much cooler than the other mountain regions. How to get there: Bus 1 6 or 9 takes you to the Cable Car to KOHLERN / COLLE which leaves every 15minutes and is free for you with the Bolzano Card. From the mountain station follow the directions to St. Isidor. You can follow the street (not many cars) or a hiking trail. It goes mainly down ;) Very easy. After that we either go back to the cable car or walk back to Bolzano (round 1 hour) mainly on the road. Insider: for 6€ a day you can rent a place at their pool ;) For sure a calm alternative compared to all the crowded swimming places on the weekend.

Embedded in vineyards and mountains, this lake is always worth a little exploration. You can swim (we recommend the small place KLUGHAMMER) or just rent a Pedalò (Tretboot/ pedal oat) and enjoy sun, nature and coming the trip afterwards with a wine tasting or dinner. Reachable by car an bus.

Paying with card is no problem in the city area. But in the moment you go for hikes and walks in the country side I recommend to bring cash money with you.

German or Italian???

In the cities like Bolzano, Italian will be the prevalent language. In smaller towns people mainly speak German. This bilingualism roots in 1918, when World War 1 ended. Till then South Tyrol was Part of Austria.

Pure, high-quality drinking water, available at any time from the tap at home - a great fortune for the Bolzaninis. The quality of Bolzano's water is so good that it can be enjoyed naturally, without chemical treatment.

PARKING? WHERE?

White stripes: local residents only. Blue stripes: payment per hour. Free on Sunday (but check the sign) and during the night. Yellow stripes: emergency and disabled people. You can drop of the luggage infront of the house, but then park the car. We recommend the WALTHER PARKING: a good and central car park which offers fair over night fees.
