Food scene

Just up the street - you'll find this El Paso treasure. Gussie's makes arguably the BEST tamales in town. I recommend the red pork ones, though anything you pick will be satisfying. You can also get fresh bread and Mexican pastries. Try it if you're looking for a taste of El Paso. Two minute drive from our place....

Just down the road is this little treasure. New to my personal mix of faves - Salt + Honey offers up a GREAT coffee and tea selection to get your day started. Their menu for food is just as good. Veg options here! Great for breakfast or lunch, it's a quaint place where you will want to linger. Two minute drive south from our place....

This is an oldie but goodie. For some yummy lasagna, crisp salad and spumoni for dessert, you couldn't pick a better place. Open for lunch and dinner we highly recommend a visit. Two minute drive from our place....

This is one of the hottest Mexican restaurants in El Paso. Great crispy tacos, flautas and enchiladas - this place is always packed. Located next to the historical Concordia cemetery - find out why this place is always busy. Oh, and be sure to get sopapillas before you leave...and watch out for that honey. Ten minutes from our place off Copia Street.

This is the place most El Pasoans love. Chicos Tacos are rolled tacos soaked in a light chile sauce and covered with cheese. They have a cult like following and I believe are best after 2am. ;) If tacos aren't your thing, the round hotdogs (sliced hot dogs grilled on a flat top and served in a hamburger bun, for real) or a burger might make you happy. Inexpensive and because all locals have been at least once...Chicos is an El Paso institution.

IF you can get this pizza ordered before they stop picking up the phone...it's a good one. Since the pandemic, it's been harder and harder to make that happen. Used to be a great little shop to grab some pizza, a sub or pasta. Their salads are good, too. They only take cash, so be prepared.

The OG of hamburger places - Rosco's serves up a really good burger. It's tiny, so maybe plan on taking this to go and for Pete's sake...don't hold the door open. I love their cheeseburgers...and the chili bowl is pretty famous, too. If I had to pick, I'd say it's best of EP.

Never a bad meal at Delicious. I love the red AND the green chile stews...or as locals call them chile colorado and chile verde. Try the gorditas...they are as implied...delicious! Walk up counter to pick what's being offered.

Grocery shopping

Want a true cultural experience at the grocery store? How about some quick and easy to heat, authentic Mexican food? Well this is the store to visit. Fantastic produce, too, Vista Market has delicious pre-made meals, a burrito bar where you can custom make your own and all the items you need to stock your kitchen. Samgöngur

As most cities in Texas, El Paso is a driving town.

The main highway, I-10 runs East and West through El Paso. The Franklin mountains are north of the highway and a great way to get your bearings. Loop 375 goes around the city north and south of I-10 and is a work around the I-10 traffic. US 54 heads north through the city. It's the route to take if you're going up to New Mexico.

Prettiest drives

By far the prettiest drive - IMHO - is Trans Mountain drive. It goes STRAIGHT through the mountain and has amazing views as you enter and exit. The poppies in the springtime are a sight to behold. The other drive to make is up and around Scenic Drive (just a few blocks up from our Airbnb). Stopping in the middle you'll see for miles and miles....Mexico, Texas all in one view.

Sunday walks on Scenic Drive

IF it's open to walking, you need to take the relatively easy (you will go uphill both ways at some point) walk across Scenic Drive. Sunday's from 6-11 am the city will shut the road to through traffic and you can take in the beautiful views at your leisure.

The most BEAUTIFUL sunsets

El Paso has the most beautiful sunsets. Period. Don't miss a chance to see it even if it's from our front porch. If you do get a chance to watch it from the mountain, or a cool outdoor patio with a margarita in the spring and summer, do it!
