One of the best place to get fish and chips in the area. While simple (and cheap), the building is located in front of the water with a great view on Conception Bay! Great option if you want to see something else than downtown St. John's!

Just 2 minutes away from the house, this is the most popular (pebble) beach near St. John's. It gets particularly popular in summers' evenings where people do fires, cook food on grills and have drinks. If you want to do this, ask us and we can give you some wood to do your own fire!

Our closest UNESCO site (only listed in the Spring 2016!). This amazing site hosts rare geological fossils of some of the very first earth ecosystems. It is quite a drive to get there but really worth the (day) trip. Best calling them first as the site is only accessible by (free) guided tour that normally starts in early PM.

One of the largest seabird reserves in Newfoundland, with over 24,000 northern gannets, 20,000 common murres, etc. An amazing place! Check for moose on the road...

Mobile (and the community of Bay Bulls before) have a number of whale watching companies that also bring you to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve to see Puffins nesting. Best doing this from late June to mid-September. Some companies/boats are quite large, others use zodiacs or small boats. Check your options or ask us!

Sightseeing

Old fishing village, it is now a typical neighborhood at a few minutes from downtown St. John's. You'll see old traditional fishing houses. The well known Quidi Vidi Brewery is located there and can be visited. The ‘Village Plantation’ building in Quidi Vidi also hosts several local artists stores. And if you can find the time, walk the trail from Quidi Vidi to Signal Hill. It is not that long or too difficult but gives you some nice views on the coast and the ocean.

Easily accessible from town, the hill dominates St. John’s and offers stunning views on the city, the harbour’s entrance (called ‘The Narrows’), and the ocean. Signal Hill is a Canadian National Historic Site, being a strategic military place since the 17th century. It is also from there that the first transatlantic wireless signal was received in 1901. If you have an hour or so and the weather is good, we highly recommend walking the ‘North Head Trail’ that starts from the top of the hill and brings you back downtown along The Narrows and the Battery neighbourhood (take your camera!). It is not a difficult hike, but avoid shoes with high heels… Lots of people run it if you feel in shape!

If you have a car, take the time to drive to Fort Amherst on the other side of St. John's Harbour. You get a great view on downtown (photos!) and there is a very short walk to a lighthouse that gives you a nice view on the ocean and the narrows (port entrance).

Looking for a short hike with a great ocean view? Drive at the end of Doran's Lane and park there. Then walk the trail that starts from there and it will only take you 10-15 mins to get to a breathtaking spot. Consider following the ocean on the left there to get to Torbay Point, a point of rocks advancing in the ocean. Nice spot to spot whales in season!

Great place, remote, with beautiful views on the ocean. But be careful, the "road" there is often bad so make sure you only drive there if you have a good car with a good clearance (4 wheel drive or similar).

Shopping

Stavanger Drive is the closest shopping district from the house, with most of the large stores available in North America (e.g. Walmart, Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Dominion (groceries), a few coffee shops (Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Second Cup), a few restaurants, etc.

Nice historic building where local artists have stores and workshops. Entry is free so have a look when you are in Quidi Vidi. There are a lot of beautiful thing and many of them are very affordable and can do nice souvenirs from Newfoundland. Our favorite: Graham Blair's wood cut prints! (http://www.grahamblairwoodcuts.com/) - we have a few in the house if you want to see them.

Entertainment & Activities

The only aquarium of the region, this is a very small local aquarium doing catch and release (= fishes are caught in the Spring and released back in the Ocean in the Fall!). Nice to see local species and also located in the very nice little town of Petty Harbour!

Drinks & Nightlife

Don't miss this local micro-brewery (one of three in town) located in a beautiful historical building. Sample their beer(s) or even go in the Underbelly (their basement) that is one of the best Whisky bars in town! Not the best option for food in my opinion but great place to get a beer!

It would be hard in a guide of the area not to include the (in-)famous George Street, the core of St. John's nightlife! George Street is said to have the highest density of bars per area in North America. You get almost everything there, from Karaoke bars to Irish Pubs. O'Reilly's is a famous pub with live music and good beers!

Famous pub in St. John's, The Ship is a small traditional pub serving local beers and some food (kitchen closes early though). They also often have live music and other events there. Far from George Street it is also often easier to get a table than other pubs.
