Sightseeing

To the left and down the hill to the right beside Sao Estavao Church. This magical place where locals go. Catch the view during the day or at night. This is Alfama s special locals lookout. You might catch live Capoeira or an impromptu Fado Session. Magical moonlit views over the neighbourhood and Tejo river.

My favourite park in Lisboa. A little hidden but very peaceful with views of the castle the bells of the monastery and the airplanes gliding into the city on display. Local artists street performers and impromptu dance sessions at sunset on the weekends. A magical little spot.

Highest lookout in Lisboa .One legend had the crusaders camped there before taking Lisbon in 1147 plotting their invasion from this spot. Another Legend has it that a woman who wants to get pregnant be blessed by sitting on an alter there. Legendary sunsets at the secret bar there. Look for ir become a member and enjoy a sunset cocktail and live world music.

It s called Portas do sol or gates of the sun because this is where the sun comes up and the old gates to the wall that surrounded Lisbon were. This is my morning lookout place! Breathtaking lookout in Lisboa the most iconic one. The quiosque there is actually not a tourist trap, great coffee and light food, pastries. Saint Vincent statue and church the pantheon dome and the whole Alfama neighbourhood at your feet. beautiful spot to start your day!

Neighbourhoods

The second oldest neighbourhood in Europe. Unique Fado music echoing through its narrow walkways. Magical views, local markets, butchers, fish mongers, cafes, bakeries, vegetable stands. An ancient village in the middle of a cosmopolitan city. One of a kind enchanting unique neighbourhood.

Unique live Music experience

My favourite place in the world possibly. Magical little room where you can sip on a Porto and listen to heavenly music. The owner from Cape Verde is an excellent musician plays many types of string instruments and sings. He invites musicians from everywhere to jam and you never know exactly what you will get but bet on something completely new and eclectic. Musicians from all over the world from flutes to harmonicas to brass instruments and singers from everywhere. No capping just rubbing your hands together at end of sets out of resect for the neighbours. This magical little place tucked on a side street near Sao Estevao church. You gave to what between music sets to enter places are limited so give a kind smile to the hostess /bartender and she will get you sorted. Best 2 euros I ve ever spent!!

Amazing setting with ancient Azulejo Tiles in a medieval building. Perfect setting for the ancient art of Fado interpretation. Portuguese guitars and accapella singing unplugged music sets. Very theatrical and unique. The songs are poems and the authors are often referred to before singing the songs. A "Lettera" as the Portuguese say is the poem. The author is the writer. The singer is merely the interpreter. Somgs of love and betrayal life with all it s tragedies and nuances. Fado is part of the Portuguese soul. To visit Portugal to visit a fado house is to visit the Portuguese soul. Melancholy, humble, tragic, playful and full of love and humility. It s important to honour the writer past interpreters and history. Fado is to be listened to in complete silence as a respect to the artists, the emotions, the past, the the present as the interpreter bares their soul accapella with little stage light or technology to protect them from the audience. If you goto a fado house do not giggle or whisper during these theatrical deeply emotional interpretation of poems that touch on our deepest parts of our being our soul is bare, it is very disrespectful to not respect this magical moment. Accompanied by a a 32 string Portuguese guitar a "Viola", that hits the high frequencies and a second guitar that hits the lower frequencies. This is a unique ancient art form. The owner is a well respected Portuguese guitar maestro relatively young still he is the "releve" of the Fado scene . Respected artists in a perfect setting. There are many Fado houses but this one is the one that is most cutting edge in my opinion. Go for dinner it costs 75 Euros al included wine etc....or go after 10:45 pm and ask the doorman if there is place inside for drinks so you can enjoy a Fado show late into the night. Officially 2 am closing but Fado sometimes takes on a life of it s own in it s purest form. Just down the street from run do Vigario on Rua dos Remedios.
