Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about 5 miles from the mouth of the river. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built entirely of granite; most previous forts used wood, earth, and stone. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston. As a virtually intact example of a mid-19th century granite coastal fortification, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and declared a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970. Fort Knox also serves as the entry site for the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge that opened to the public in 2007.

City/town information

Like many Maine communities, Ellsworth has a lot of history. After the Great Fire during The Depression, which destroyed much of the downtown commercial district, planners had completely redesigned the layout of the city creating a more easily navigable village as well as adding Ellsworth's shopping district. Today, High Street in the Downtown area is titled the largest shopping district in Hancock County. Despite the fire during a difficult economical era, today the city of Ellsworth is flourishing - making this city perfect for a vacation or weekend getaway to the Downeast region.

The city of Bangor is perhaps most well known as the setting for many of Stephen King's stories, a reputation that has led to the nickname Transylmainia. There is more to Bangor than just tales of horror, however. There is a thriving arts scene, with museums, galleries, theaters, a symphony orchestra and a popular sidewalk art festival every summer. The area around Bangor includes the coastal Acadia National Park and the wooded Baxter State Park, providing plenty of outdoor adventure.

The brewery is nestled on the river with a great skyline view. Plenty of outdoor picnic table seating to watch the sunset over the Penobscot River. Inside is industrial with high ceilings and a view of their brewing tanks! Bar seating is plentiful and "first come" so if you're lucky, you can be fully served there before your table is ready. Lastly, there is a paved parking lot in front of the restaurant, but if that fills up, there is a side street that will take you to an unpaved lot where some trailers are parked.

C.D. "Pat" Farnsworth opened Farnsworth's Cafe in Orono, Maine in July 1931. Pat's dream was backed by $175.00, long hours and hard work. Because of his efforts, Pat saw the cafe, which originally sold ice cream and confections, become a full service restaurant. In 1953 Pat added pizza to his menu. The fresh dough pizza, topped with a special sauce Pat Farnsworth developed by Pat and his wife Fran, were an instant success. Pat's change in the menu transformed Farnsworth Cafe into Pat's Pizza. Over the years Pat's Pizza has become a favorite of University of Maine students. In fact, it has been said that an education at the University is not complete without a Pat's Pizza. Today, Pat's Pizza is enjoyed not only in Orono, but also in Newport, Augusta, Auburn, Yarmouth, Sanford, Scarborough, North Windham, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Hampden, Bethel, Presque Isle, Sanford, and our newest location in the Old Port of Portland Maine. All of Pat's Pizza Restaurants offer friendly, casual and affordable dining for the entire family. Pat Farnsworth passed away on February 3, 2003 at the age of 90. His work ethic and philosophies live on in each location.
